Just got laid off along with half the people in my practice. Not a fun thing. I guess the good news is that I am 4 weeks away from finishing my MBA the bad being of course that not only are people not hiring right now but also the holiday season is right around the corner. Looks like handicapping gets shelved for the time being.

"Welcome to Barnes and Noble would you like to buy our Frequent Reader Card..."

So if anyone knows people in the DC area who may need a 7 year consultant with an MBA, give me a shout.

Phil,

Sorry to hear about that, & with you car having problems, this has not been a pleasant few days.

When I graduated with an MBA, I had trouble finding a job. So I turned my sights towards sales. You seem to be a personable guy so you might want to look towards sales also. What is good about sales is that the pay coincides with the amount of time & energy a person puts into it. Just a thought.

Good luck

Sorry to hear that, Ace.

I got laid off about 1.5 years ago with a wife and mortgage. It's not fun. I went almost 6 months w/o a job. That was in part becuase I turned down a couple early offers, though, and then a "sure thing" fell through when my connection had a stroke. It did wonders for the account at paradisepoker, though. But, it is something a lot of people have gone through. Don't try to be too stressed about it because there's only so much you can do when you're looking.

Get to the unemployment office or call them. Some of the other people I got laid off with were like, "unemployment, no way," and they sat around collecting nothing while I got my $250 a week. It was all over the phone for me, too. I never had to stand in a line. I got by on unemployment checks, some under-the-table physical labor jobs and scrimping.

Not that you were talking about relocating, but don't neglect Baltimore in your job search if you're looking to stay in the area. There are plenty of consulting companies in town. Living in DC and communting to B-more is the opposite of how people normally do it, but it's a good town to live in, too. But shit, there's got to be a ton of consulting jobs in DC.

Anyway, GL. Let me know if you would like any specific info about B-more.

Sorry to hear about that Ace. As I'm sure you already know, while it may be hard at times, just try to stay positive and know that you've got people pulling for you. Best of luck.

On the course!
Good luck, sir, and keep in touch. I'm sure you will land on your feet, and you seem to pick a few winners every week, so I wouldn't quit!

Omar, LMFAO!!!!!

Phil, be tough and keep checking the papers. Are there any headhunters in your area?? have you tried the hot jobs.com, monster.com, etc etc??

spend as many days as possible (from sun-up to sun down) dropping off resumes to everyone and their brother. check with friends. sometimes it's not WHAT you know, but WHO you know.

Hope things work out well for you bro!!!! just my 2 cents. Best of luck!!!!!!!! Let's kick ass in Vegas (maybe can make enough to take a few months off!) :D

Above the Clouds....
Sorry to hear what happened. I worked for a company for 27 years and they closed the doors with my daughter getting married several months after that. Yeah real bummer but things fell in place. I've had 3 jobs since and been laid off three times. How do you figure, work for 27 yrs then laid off 3 times?? Call unemployment and get something coming in while you look. I know there aren't a lot of jobs out there but with unemployment it might buy some time. GL I've been through it.

Depending on your finanacial situation, a good short term plan might be to try to get a job teaching. Don't know what it is like where you are, but in California, there are many openings for teaching. You could probably get a contract for the rest of the year. That would give you benefits. With your education, even with no experience, you would probably start between 35k and 40k. Teaching hours are fantastic and would allow you to look for something you really wanted to get. At least if your were making that kind of money, you might be able to take what you want and now what is available. If you are pretty well set financially, you might want to consider substitute teaching. Most districts pay more than $100 per day and you can pick and choose when you work - but no benefits. Go to the Ed dept at your school - they could probably place you. Good luck whatever you choose!

Hey Buddy just remember what the Mother Superior said on the "Sound Of Music",.....whenever God closes a door, he opens a window somewhere" Be ready to jump thru that window of opportunity! In the meantime take a day or two and relax, and relish that I will be back at work trying to keep up and you will have those batteries recharged in no time flat.

I'm not really sure what a "consultant" does but these are jobs open with Whitman-Walker Clinic if you're interested. We're a non-profit so that equates to "not the greatest wages" and, perhaps you're overqualified with an MBA, but it's something in DC and we're hiring.

DEVELOPMENT

Manage all aspects of the Clinic?s direct mail program, including telemarketing. Assist with developing a media & promotional plan for marketing the Clinic's efforts in the Combined Federal Campaign & United Way Campaign, including advertising, public speaking, liaison activities with government agencies, private employers & employee groups. Requires Bachelor?s degree & 2 or 3 years experience in computer-related or accounting field. 3 years experience in direct mail processes. Excellent writing skills & experience in working with diverse groups of people. Prior supervisory experience; be good team player & show demonstrated interest in the AIDS crisis & in gay & lesbian issues.

FINANCE

CONTRACTS AND GRANTS SPECIALIST: Prepare, record & submit invoices according to schedules; maintain all contracts & grants files; monitor monthly expenditure, prepare program reports as directed; assist with contracting issues. BS or equivalent exp. Excellent communications skills.

If you'd like to know more about the organization, MJ can give you my e-mail addy. Good Luck!

Sorry to hear that, but laid-offs are common these days. Use this down time to finish strong with you MBA.

I got laid off a year ago. I took the time to obtain the CPA license. I've been looking for the right job for a couple of months now. Things are slow in CA. Might to settle for anything decent since I don't want to wait any longer.

Anyway, acehistr8, good luck with your job search.

DO NOT LET THE MAN GET YOU DOWN!!!!

I hit the phones this morning like a man possessed. Called professors, guys I was in school with, anyone I knew. Have three interviews for semi-senior level positions set up in the next 7 days. All at a substantial rate increase. Therefore the handicapping returns tonight in earnest!

Combine that with my severence and unemployment and I may just take 3 months off and not work until February.

Hope you folks know how much all the posts and emails mean to me.
