Couric: 'Real Progress' In Iraq
Evening News Anchor Says Police Finally Making Inroads

Ground Zero Today: Six Years After 9/11
(CBS) BAGHDAD, Iraq One week before Gen. David Petraeus is expected to give his report on U.S. progress in Iraq, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric says she has already seen dramatic improvements in the country.

"We hear so much about things going bad, but real progress has been made there in terms of security and stability," Couric said Tuesday. "I mean, obviously, infrastructure problems abound, but Sunnis and U.S. forces are working together. They banded together because they had a common enemy: al Qaeda."

Couric traveled to the city of Fallujah in Anbar province, which U.S. forces entered in April 2003 and again in November 2004. That is the same city where, in house-to-house fighting, American forces uncovered nearly two-dozen torture chambers.

"We found numerous houses, also, where people were just chained to a wall for extended periods of time," U.S. military intelligence officer Major Jim West said back on Nov. 22, 2004.

"The face of Satan was here in Fallujah, and I'm absolutely convinced that that was true," said Marine Lt. Col. Gareth Brandl.

It is also the city where four American military contractors were set on fire, mutilated and hanged from a bridge by insurgents.

Now Fallujah is "considered a real role model of something working right in Iraq," Couric said.

Two quick thoughts...

First, I'd imagine Katie might be finally writing her own copy, and coming up with flowers to make her stay there as brief as possible...:)

And, I can't say I'm surprised that she comes up with warm fluffies considering her in-depth hard-hitting reporting style...

Things were so bad that we had to sell our soul and bribe the Sunnis into fighting with us. The same people that were recently killing us we had to bribe. So Doggy breath now what happens when we leave? The Sunnies and Shites are just gonna shake hands and kiss and make up? Its a mess and it will always be a mess and the jackass in office created it. There are no solutions but to leave. The real solution would be to go to alternative energy but that would never happen when you have a bunch of scumbags running the gov't.

Sponge - I hate to keep calling you a dipstick over and over but geez Louise.

The goverment could not get us on alternative fuels for about 10 years even with maximum effort.

Cant you absorb that much ? We are dependant on gas and who has all the gas . Yeh the middle east, you guessed it.

If not for gas our entire economy would come to a complete stop. No more interstate commerce, food in the stores, etc etc au nauseum.

Without gas, America is bankrupted.

It will take time. The thing that really pisses me off is that I heard Exxon on a commercial awhile back saying,....... we are putting millions into alternative fuels and in the not too distant future we will have a fuel that will cost on par with what you are paying today.

Fawk that. Them scheming bastards should not even be allowed into it. Let them go back into the stone age. They have done enough damage to the American people.

Bush can't leave without the oil law signed. The way Bush has been screwing the American people, he's gotta screw the Iraqis too. He's running out of time, 17 months and he's booted out of the Whitehouse. Meanwhile GI's are dying everyday. One thing is for sure, this war will kill the Repub party, Bush does not care. The Repubs will have to find real jobs in their home states come next year.

Scott you might want to go over to Brazil and ask them how they did it. We don't want to do it and its that plain and simple. Stop being naive.

:142smilie :mj07:

Yeah, VW Brasilias and Ford "Corcel's" goin' 40 kph on corn oil.
Sounds great. Being there is quite different. Though for being stuck in huge traffic jams most the day and zipping ("zzzzz") back and forth, anything that burns should do the job.

Maybe we can levitate.
Come on, let's all concentrate and hum.... hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :142smilie

I have absolutely no doubt you're being honest.

I have no doubt he's bheing honest either, if he's talking about spending that year in the military with all the protection, weapons, food, electricity, water, internet..etc. Even that is a little strange, but from Wayne, I would believe it.

However, I wonder if he would want to live as a civilian in Baghdad for a year without consistently, or at all, having the above.

While his disdain for black people is well documented, I would have to check my friends sanity if he would rather spend a year as a civilian in Baghdad rather than a month in Watts.

Obviously not all his dogs are barking.

Matt for the upteenth time I have no distain for black people--

I have distain for graffitti filled neighborhoods--pimps and whores--piss 2 inches deep and shit on floor in public restrooms--junkies--illiteracy--70% illegitamcy ect ect

If the shoe fts --where it--regardless of nationality.

You and Smurph are the most PC people on earth--I'm expecting the two of you any day to get Edward sue National Geographic for racial bias because they only have only shown one race in neandrathal habitat for the last 20 years.

Would advise the two of you to avoid any type of handicapping because of total disrefard of facts vs opinion.

As I said before I am statisitically predjudice where ever the stats dictate--regardless of race color or creed. If you steal--your a thief--perjury and obstruction of justice are just that--not a BJ :)

But I thought you liked Kentucky.

As for being PC, I guess that comes down to one's own personal definition of that.

Jeez Wayne,

I was just trying to say that most people would rather live in Watts for a month than live as a civilian in Iraq for a year.

Do you have 'distain' for neighborhoods where you pray that you don't get blown up walking around? Or where you have little electricity each day? Or where your tribal allegiance may cost you your life at any time?

Anyways, you never really answered my point. Would you really rather live in Iraq as a civilian for a year rather than Watts for a month? There are no blacks in Iraq, I realize, but there are other grave risks. Even graver than the blacks, IMO.

Just sayin.'

No reason to get all excited.
