I remember when this story came out. I think it was over 30 residents died when their nursing home was flooded. I remember how appalled I was at the time. Hard to comment fully since I wasn't at the trial, but this does seem unjust on the surface. I just can't imagine not doing everything possible to try to get those residents out. The owners, of course, probably do no hands on care, and I'm sure they weren't anywhere close to the home when this happened. Still, hard to imagine those infirm people laying in their beds and drowning.

The defense was unable to introduce either testimony or documents showing that the majority of nursing homes in the path of the storm ? 36 of 57 ? did not evacuate, or that there were deaths at other homes, including 22 at a New Orleans nursing home.

Hell of a tough story. They should have some culpability for what happened. Maybe not to the extent of the charges that were brought against them.

St Bernard Parish, which is the location of the home, was not believed to be in danger of catastrophic flooding.
