The Los Angeles Angels, looking to bolster their rotation for the last five weeks of the season and in October, are close to completing a deal for left-hander Scott Kazmir of the Tampa Bay Rays, according to sources.

The Angels and Rays had extensive conversations before the trade deadline about Kazmir, who is 8-7 with a 5.92 ERA.

MLB.com is reporting that the Rays will receive two prospects: pitcher Alexander Torres and third baseman Matthew Sweeney.

The Rays definitely would get salary relief in the deal. Tampa Bay is barreling toward a series of tough financial decisions because of its payroll restrictions, and the 25-year-old Kazmir is in the first year of a three-year, $28.5 million deal.

Tampa Bay may try to replace him in the rotation with one of its young prospects, such as Wade Davis, who is 10-7 with a 3.26 in Triple-A. The Rays currently stand 3? games out in the AL wild-card race.

Kazmir was likely among a slew of players the Rays passed through waivers this week, and it may well be that he was claimed by the Angels. Kazmir is making $6 million this year, and will make salaries of $8 million in 2010, $12 million in 2011.

The Angels have dealt with a series of injuries and inconsistency with their rotation this season, as well as the death of Nick Adenhart. The Angels rank 24th in starters' ERA in the majors, at 4.96 -- yet have a four-game lead in the AL West, largely because they have had an overpowering offense that leads the majors in runs.

Kazmir went to the Rays in a trade with the Mets for Victor Zambrano.

on a lesser note...

Twins acquired RHP Jon Rauch from Diamondbacks for a player to be named later.

Rauch has seen better days, but perhaps the added fire of being thrown into a pennant race will invigorate him. The Twins were desperate for a veteran arm with late-inning experience, so unless the player to be named is someone of importance this is probably a minor win for them. Rauch will be due $2.9 million in 2010.

Incredibly huge. Kaz has had a down year but has been quality his last 5 or 6 starts. Yahoo reports he will likely go to the bullpen

They need help out there but I can't see Scioscia running Trevor Bell or O'Sullivan out there every fifth start. Bell has tons of upside but I don't think he's ready to pitch in important games down the stretch.

Looks like there will probably be an open competition among Ervin, Saunders and Kaz for the 3 and 4 spot come October with the odd man out going to the pen, assuming Kaz doesn't go directly there.

Good deal for the Halos. Didn't seem like they gave up too much for him either.

He'll start....they are crazy not to put him as starter. The guy is a STUD!! Lead the Rays to World Series last year!! THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!!!!! Not too sure about his health right now, but that pick up is absolutely HUGE!!! Lackey/Weaver/Saunders and now Kaz!!! With that offense (Not last night!! A-Holes!!!).....watch out!!!
