ESPN.com news services
In the latest shocking development from a championship team gone awry, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have deactivated former All-Pro wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson for the rest of the season, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports.

According to Pasquarelli, Johnson has been told that he is excused from all team-related functions and that he will be inactive for the Buccaneers' six remaining games. Sources close to Johnson said they believe the move is a prelude to an eventual trade that would have to take place after the season. The NFL trading deadline for 2003 passed in October.

Although the team has not yet released an official reason for the move, Johnson had openly complained in recent weeks about not getting enough passes thrown his way and his on-again, off-again relationship with Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden is well documented.

Buccaneers general manager Rich McKay has scheduled a news conference for 4 p.m. ET.

An eight-year veteran and the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft, Johnson has 45 catches for 600 yards and three touchdowns this season -- his fourth in Tampa Bay after starting his career with the New York Jets. For his career, Johnson has 603 catches for 7,936 yards and 48 touchdowns.

So, not officially released, although i guess so for all intents and purposes.

THROW ME THE DAMN BALL!

All the talking heads up here in Boston are talking how good he'd look in a Pat's uniform....Lest we forget Terry Glenn?!

For all his mouthing off, I think he is a very tough player. The guy will go over the middle and he will BLOCK like a demon for you. Something must've really gone wrong in TB.

Plenty of teams would love to have him.

finally someone that calls it like it is.
i totally agree, something must have gone wrong in tampa because keyshawn -- for all the crap that he takes -- is one of the toughest receivers in the league in traffic and might very well be the best blocking WR in football.
obviously, he brings a lot of criticism upon himself with his demands for the ball. but imo, hes earned the right to bitch.

Just saw a phone conversation with KJ on sports channel.

KJ says he is shocked and has no idea what he did to deserve this.

Uh KJ I think its called insubordination and homey and Gruden don't play that chit. That attitude can really affect the team in a negative way.

We would take KJ on the Falcons except we also got
Fearless Price who crys when the ball is not thrown to him
and never seen a block he couldnt bypass.

Maybe KJ will learn to shut his mouth. He had four years left on a 56 million dollar contract. He put his house up for sale last week.
That might have been the last straw.

"the bunker"
he`s a good receiver

he`s a good receiver

but problem`s with chrebet in n.y...........sapp.....gruden now......

key`s the one with the problem....why can`t these guy`s be part of the team?....it`s great to want to stand out...to be special....but not at the expense of team unity....

if i was on the bucs, and he jumped in the coaches face on the sideline,in public, disrupting the team,i`d heve serious problems with him...and i`d tell him or t.o. to their face....

bravo,gruden....you gained alot of respect in my eyes...

johnson and t.o. need to learn to act like they are part of the team....and not like spoiled babies...

they wouldn`t last long on my old flag team...those guys acted more like pros than these guys...
