NASCAR Picks for Las Vegas

by Brian Polking, Monday, March 4, 2013 4:43:06 PM CSTFFToolbox.com

Track Info:
Length: 1.500 miles
Shape: D-Shaped Oval
Type: Intermediate
Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
View Average Finishes

Last weekend's race at Phoenix was a reminder that while some things stay the same after the offseason, there are plenty of changes, as well. For example, Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski are still the cream of the fantasy crop, and both have opened the year with back-to-back top-five finishes. On the other hand, 2012 fantasy bust Carl Edwards already has more wins than he did all of last season, and veteran Jeff Burton popped up inside the top 10 for just the third time since last July. Granted, it is still very early in the 2012 season, and while Edwards and Burton may not sustain their success, it is a safe bet that a few drivers that struggled last year will be serious fantasy contributors this season and vice versa.
With that in mind, this weekend's trip to Las Vegas Motor Speedway becomes just a bit more important. After all, the track's 1.5-mile layout is the most common on the schedule, and while the "cookie-cutter" label often applied to these intermediate ovals is a bit misleading, there is no denying the fact that the best drivers in the series all run well at a majority of the 1.5-mile tracks. Heck, the two drivers with the best average finish at the intermediate ovals during the past five seasons are Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart, and they have combined to win seven of the last eight championships. Fantasy owners should pay close attention to the action on the track this weekend because it could be the best early-season indicator of what to expect the rest of the way.

1. Tony Stewart, #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Normally a slow starter, Stewart has been bucking the trend at Las Vegas in recent years. Not only is he the defending winner of this weekend's race, but he has actually led the most laps at the track in each of the past two years. Stewart's average finish at the track since the start of the 2010 season is an impressive 3.3, and he has eight finishes of seventh or better in 15 career Vegas starts.

2. Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

His scorching hot start to the 2013 season should continue at Vegas. Johnson is a four-time winner at the track, and his 9.8 average finish is the best in the series. He finished second at the track last season, and he should be right back in the mix for a win Sunday.

3. Carl Edwards, #99 Aflac/Subway/Fastenal, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Fresh off his first win in nearly two years, Edwards could keep the momentum going this weekend. After all, his 10.3 average finish at Las Vegas is the second best in the series. Edwards is also a two-time winner at the track with his most recent victory coming in 2011, and he even managed a fifth-place finish last year when he had a down season by his standards.

4. Greg Biffle, #16 3M, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Biffle has been rock solid at Las Vegas for a while now, and he seems to be getting better. He has finished in the top 10 in six of his last eight starts at the track, and he tied his career-best finish last year with a third-place run. Biffle has always been able to do some damage at the 1.5-mile tracks, and he deserves plenty of consideration from fantasy owners this weekend.

5. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx Express, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

In seven starts at Las Vegas, Hamlin has cracked the top 10 four times, finishing as high as third. Overall, his 12.9 average finish at the track ranks sixth in the series. He also looked pretty stout last weekend at Phoenix, driving from last to third during a race when passing was difficult.

6. Brad Keselowski, #2 Miller Lite, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class A]

His numbers at Las Vegas are actually horrible. In four starts at the track, Keselowski has never cracked the top 25, and he has amassed an abysmal 30.5 average finish. That being said, he has finished in the top 20 in 33 of the 35 races since the series visited Vegas last year, and he has opened up 2013 with back-to-back fourth-place finishes. I think he is ready to bust out of his Vegas slump.>

7. Matt Kenseth, #20 Home Depot/Dollar General, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Although he had an off day at Vegas last year, Kenseth has been one of the most consistent options at the track for years. His 12.5 average finish is the fourth best in the series, and he has finished outside the top 20 just three times in 13 starts. Kenseth has been particularly strong over the last 10 races, winning twice and logging seven top-10s.

8. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., #88 Army National Guard, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

Junior is off to a hot start, notching top-five finishes in the first two races of 2013. Now, he gets to head to a track where he has finished 11th or better in five of his last six starts. Fantasy owners should expect a top-10 effort from Junior this weekend at Las Vegas, and he should make a solid addition to lineups.

9. Jeff Gordon, #24 Drive to End Hunger/DuPont, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Several bad finishes bog down his average finish at Las Vegas, but Gordon has had plenty of strong efforts, as well. In fact, he is a former winner at the track, and he has finished sixth or better five times in his last eight starts. His inconsistency hurts his value a bit, but Gordon definitely has top-five potential this weekend.

10. Clint Bowyer, #15 Five Hour Energy Drink, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class A]

He is in the middle of his best stretch at Las Vegas, and Bowyer has reeled off four straight top-15s at the track. During the stretch, he has compiled a 7.8 average finish and cracked the top 10 three times. Bowyer might not deliver a top-five finish this weekend, but he should provide solid results for fantasy owners.

11. Kevin Harvick, #29 Budweiser/Jimmy Johns, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class A]

His results at Vegas have been drastically different over the years, but for the most part, Harvick has been solid at the track. He has finished in the top 20 in his last five races at Las Vegas, finishing in the top five twice and outside the top 10 three times during the stretch. Owners should definitely expect a top-15 from Harvick this weekend, but anything more than that isn't a guarantee.

12. Kasey Kahne, #5 Farmers Insurance, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Although 1.5-mile tracks tend to be his best, Kahne has never dominated at Las Vegas. He does have five straight top-20s at the track, but he has just two top-10s and zero top-five finishes during the stretch. Kahne is more than capable of turning things around at any point, but given his numbers thus far, owners shouldn't get their hopes too high for Kahne this weekend

13. Kyle Busch, #18 M&M's/Interstate Batteries, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class B]

We are just two races into 2013, Kyle Busch has had two engine issues and shows no signs of avoiding the horrible luck that plagued him most of last season. He does have three top-three finishes at his home track, including a win, but given the seemingly ongoing engine troubles, Busch's tremendous potential comes with some risks.
14. Ryan Newman, #39 Quicken Loans, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class B]

After a somewhat unspectacular career at Las Vegas, Newman has delivered back-to-back top-five finishes at the 1.5-mile track. Another strong run isn't out of the question, but given the fact that Newman just doesn't pile up a lot of top-five finishes, a top-15 finish is a much more reasonable and safe expectation.

15. Joey Logano, #22 Shell-Pennzoil, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class B]

It has been a rough start for Logano at Penske Racing, but he could get on track this weekend at Las Vegas. The 1.5-mile oval has been one of his better intermediate tracks, and Logano has compiled a 14.5 average finish in four career starts. He could certainly back up his career numbers this weekend and deliver a top-15 finish for owners.

16. Jeff Burton, #31 Caterpillar/Cheerios, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

While Carl Edwards' stock rose a ton after his win at Phoenix, Burton's 10th-place run was encouraging, as well. After struggling the past two seasons, it was refreshing to see the veteran provide a decent finish. Burton is definitely worth watching going forward, and considering his 10.9 average finish at Las Vegas is the third best in the series, owners may want to take a chance on him as early as Sunday.

17. Paul Menard, #27 Menard's, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Menard has been trending in the right direction at Las Vegas. He has finished 17th, 12th and seventh in his last three starts at the 1.5-mile track, and his seventh-place run last year was his best career finish at Vegas. You can never call Menard a safe bet for a top-10, but he could be a solid sleeper option this weekend given his recent performances.

18. Mark Martin, #55 Aaron's Dream Machine, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Despite seven career finishes of sixth or better at Las Vegas, Martin isn't a lock to finish near the front. The veteran has struggled in his last two starts at the track, failing to crack the top 15. If anything, owners may want to keep an eye on Martin during the practice sessions to see if he has recaptured the feel for the 1.5-mile track before deciding whether or not to make room on their rosters.

19. Marcos Ambrose, #9 Stanley Black & Decker/DeWalt, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

Owners looking for a surprise sleeper this weekend may want to take a chance on Ambrose. In four starts at the track, he has a 12.8 average finish and has finished in the top 20 in all four starts. Although 1.5-mile tracks normally aren't his strong suit, Ambrose could provide a useful finish this weekend.

20. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., #17 Best Buy/Fifth Third Bank, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class C]

The rookie is off to a solid start, finishing 12th and 16th in the two races thus far. Now, he gets to head to a Las Vegas track that should fit both his strengths and the strengths of his Roush Fenway Racing team. This ranking is a little conservative because of the unknowns that come with rookies, but in Yahoo! leagues, Stenhouse is a C-List option that could produce great results.

21. Trevor Bayne, #21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center, Wood Brothers Racing [Yahoo Class C]

He only runs a limited schedule, but Bayne is worth adding this weekend for owners looking for a potential sleeper. After finishing 20th in his Las Vegas debut in 2011, Bayne finished a solid ninth at the track last year. Even if you split the difference, he should be in the mix for a top-15 on Sunday.

22. Martin Truex, Jr., #56 NAPA Auto Parts, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

His 17.4 average finish says it all. Truex hasn't been terrible at Las Vegas, but he hasn't had a lot of strong runs either. In fact, he has just a single top 10 in seven career starts at the track. The lack of any serious upside makes Truex a somewhat uninteresting fantasy option this weekend.

23. Jamie McMurray, #1 McDonald's/Cessna, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

On the plus side, McMurray has three top-10s in his last six starts at Las Vegas. However, he also has three finishes of 25th or worse during the stretch. More importantly, McMurray just doesn't offer much in the way of value for fantasy owners. His bad finishes far outweigh his occasional solid runs, and the potential reward just isn't worth the risk.

24. Kurt Busch, #78 Furniture Row, Furniture Row Racing [Yahoo Class B]

The Nevada native has always had issues at his home track. Busch has a 21.9 average finish at Las Vegas for his career, and in his last six starts, he has five finishes outside the top 20. Maybe it is the pressure of performing well in front of family and friends, but for some reason, Busch just doesn't have much success at Las Vegas.

25. Aric Almirola, #43 Smithfield Foods/STP, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

He picked up where he left off last year, opening 2013 with back-to-back top-15 finishes. I'd take a wait-and-see approach on Almirola for at least another week, but if he delivers a top-15 finish at a Las Vegas track that has given him fits thus far, it may be time to buy into him as a legitimate fantasy contributor.
26. Juan Montoya, #42 Target, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

The good news is that Montoya finished third at Las Vegas in 2011. The bad news is that he has finished outside the top 15 in every other start at the track. It is the same old story for Montoya, and his strong runs are simply too rare while his poor outings tend to be really, really bad.

27. Austin Dillon, #33 Honey Nut Cheerios, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class C]

Dillon will get a turn in the Phoenix Racing No. 51 this weekend, and while he is inexperienced and the team is underfunded, all is not lost. After all, Dillon has shown enough success in his young racing career that he could easily sneak into the top 25 this weekend. Depending on the format, he could make a decent sleeper option at Las Vegas.

28. David Ragan, #34 Peanut Patch, Front Row Motorsports [Yahoo Class C]

While he hasn't been spectacular at Las Vegas, Ragan has been consistent. He has finished 23rd, 22nd and 21st in his last three starts at the track. At the very least, Ragan should be in the mix for a top-25 this weekend.

29. Bobby Labonte, #47 Clorox/Bush's Baked Beans, JTG Daugherty Racing [Yahoo Class B]

You aren't going to get anything special from Labonte at Las Vegas, but the veteran should be able to stay out of trouble. He has finished 26th and 24th in his last two starts at the track, and he will likely pop up in the top 30 again this Sunday.

30. Casey Mears, #13 GEICO, Germain Racing [Yahoo Class C]

Mears quietly had a great performance last weekend at Phoenix, finishing 14th. I don't buy into the idea that a top-15 finish is a sign of things to come by any means, but it was an impressive enough showing from a single-car team to make me think his value could increase a bit in 2013. Mears is still a fringe option at best until further notice, but he could be worth keeping an eye on as a potential sleeper down the road.

check out Harvicks last 4 years..

getting 10-1 or better is real hard to turn down with a driver of his talent..

he and Edwards may make someone quite a few acorns with matchup wagering
