GAME NOTES: Intrastate rivals meet up in Lawrence, as the sixth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks play host to the Kansas State Wildcats in Big 12 action at the Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks are still in the hunt for the Big 12 title, as they sit a game behind league leading Texas (11-2) with three games to play. Bill Self's squad faltered at Oklahoma State last weekend (61-60), but bounced back with Wednesday's 75-64 win at Iowa State. With the victory, Kansas moved to 25-3 overall and 10-3 in conference play. The Wildcats were in the conference hunt just a couple of weeks ago, but the team has tailed off thanks to three straight losses. On Monday, it was nationally-ranked Texas that did Frank Martin's team in, topping KSU 74-65 and dropping the Wildcats to 8-2 in the Big 12. Kansas has won 35 of the last 37 meetings dating back to 1994 and since the inception of the Big 12, holds a 27-2 edge in the series. The Jayhawks are seeking the regular season sweep after posting an 84-75 decision in Manhattan on January 30th.

The Wildcats struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Texas earlier this week, shooting a mere .328 from the floor, including a dreadful 7-of-27 from behind the arc (.259). Freshman sensation Michael Beasley was exempt from the poor shooting, as he hit 10-of-21 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the free- throw line to finish with 30 points. Beasley completed a double-double with 15 rebounds and continues to build on his national freshman record with his 24th double-double of the season. Fellow freshman Jacob Pullen poured in 19 points in support, but second-leading scorer Bill Walker, also a freshman, missed all 14 of his shots in the game and finished with a disappointing one point. It has been the freshmen trio that has fueled almost all of K-State's success this season. Beasley has been elevated to a class all by himself, ranking third in the country in scoring (26.2 ppg) and first in rebounding (12.6 rpg). Walker has been ultra-productive as well, posting 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per outing. Pullen round out the double-digit threats with 10.3 ppg.

If Kansas State wants an up-tempo game, the Jayhawks would be more than willing to oblige. Kansas is one of the top offensive teams in the nation this year. averaging a stout 81.3 ppg, while delivering on 50.4 percent from the floor (third nationally). KU is an aggressive team offensively, but doesn't let it effect its defensive tenacity. The team ranks among the national leaders with a +20.0 scoring margin, holding foes to just 61.3 ppg and well under 40 percent shooting (.384). Four of the team's five starters are boasting double-digit averages, led by Darrell Arthur's 13.7 ppg. Darnell Jackson joins Arthur in the frontcourt with 12.3 ppg and a team-high 6.9 rpg. Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers lead the way in the backcourt with 12.2 ppg apiece. Rush leads the team with 50 three-pointers, while Chalmers is KU's top distributor (128 assists). In the win over Iowa State, Kansas shot a season-high .636 from the floor and was led by a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds from Arthur. Chalmers and Rush poured in 15 points each, while fellow guard Russell Robinson finished with five points, five assists and 10 boards.

The Jayhawks are perfect at home this season and despite probably another supreme effort from Beasley, should remain so with a double-digit win over the visiting Wildcats. GO JAYHAWKS!!!:00hour
