Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama had a change of heart yesterday about one of his major campaign issues; the Bush Tax Cuts.

The Associated Press quotes Obama as now saying that ?he would delay rescinding President Bush's tax cuts on wealthy Americans if he becomes the next president and the economy is in a recession, suggesting such an increase would further hurt the economy

Saint - Do you think the shareholders of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, JP Morgan, Ford and GM are the underbelly of America?

Freeze - I'm right here.

I doubt he does. Maybe those faith based organizations but not those you mention.

What is there to say? The guy say's if the economy is in a recession he will rethink things instead of some nutcase like Bush who makes decisions on gut feelings and sticks to them no matter how they go.

Dr. Saint was fine when the fine people of North Carolina were subsidizing his dental education, but now . . . he wants everyone off of the government nipple.

i never said i wanted everyone off the tit. it just needs to be fixed. there's nothing wrong with taking care of the less fortunate, but the whole system is so fuked up it rewards lack of action. the worst off in this country are the hard working people who make just enough that they don't qualify for govt aid. what a system we have when you're better off not working.

I guess I could have bought a house above my means and defaulted so the govt could bail me out.

When Bush took office the Top 1% paid about 30% of the income taxes. Today the top 1% pays 40%. As somebody in that group - though at the bottom of it -let me assure you my taxes have gone through the roof and my deductions are less and less each year.

And dont buy into Obama's tax BS about only the rich. He wants to raise social security taxes - that effects everyone. He wants to end the social security tax "cap." That effects everyone making $100k or more. He wants to add taxes to oil companies- who do you think will end up paying that? And so on and so on.

Moreover Obama's tax plan - if he is right which not a single economist thus far has agreed - would add $80 billion to the federal coffers. That would pay for about 10% of all the programs he has stated he advocates.

The economics here isnt all that complicated - taxes need to be cut, the code reformed so everyone pays, and spending needs to be cut. And cut. And cut.

I might add --tax revenue after tax cut is up 19% over tax revenue prior to tax cut (eg Clinton admin)

Its not the tax revenue--its the spending.

--and can someone explain to me--how O intended to repeal Bush tax cuts to all tax payers --yet cut taxes for 95% of tax payers if elected?

I won't hold my breath waiting for answer :)

Those numbers seem higher than I've seen and usually they exclude SS taxes in the equation.

You say that if we tax the oil companies, that we're the ones that pay for it. Which is why I agree that any windfall tax isn't beneficial (no matter what the governor of Alaska does ;) )

But somehow if we raise taxes on the top 1%, everyone thinks that the top 1% are the ones that are going to take the hit. But in almost all situations, those taxes (on earned income) will be passed onto the customer of whatever the final product is.
