I am interested in a beach vacation in Florida and got it narrowed down to Lido Beach and the Siesta Key. Can any of you tell me the difference between the sand in these two areas? I have been to Destin and love the white sand. Is the sand at Lido Beach as white as the sand in Destin?

My uncle lives in Siesta Key. One of the nicest beaches in the world- I have been to a lot. The nightlife isn't anything to write home about, but the sand is like powdered sugar.

Destin is white trash.

Lido Beach is nice if you're a 60 year old gay man.

That's my assesment.

On the course!
Siesta Key has really gone to shit. It smelled like shit the past few visits there, and is getting dirtier by the year.

Clean up crews rake the seaweed and dead fish up in the morning now, too. That shit was never there years ago.

Plus, it is starting to get "shelly". It used to be a nice soft beach, but plenty of shell fragments are starting to mix in with the sand.

I used to love going there every year, now I stay the hell away.

Siesta Key remains one of the nicest beaches. yyz is probably referring to the red tide that happens every once in a while. you never want to go if you know the red tide is there. there is dead fish on the beach each morning, the smell is horrible and noone goes to the beach. its basically tiny organisms that are deadly to all the sea life. don't know the cause or the frequency but i was down there last summer and it was there for a little while.
otherwise, the sand is great, the scenery on the beach is pretty good as a lot of college chicks gather around. the nightlife isnt all that great, as mentioned, there is a village type area with 4 or 5 bars in a row.
if you are looking for a quiet, good time though with the fam or whatever, this is a good place for that.
just try and find out if the redtide is going to be there when you want to go.

Red tide is another story. That is bad, too. But overall......The beach has gone downhill, IMO, a good bit over the last 10-15 years.

My mom lives on Siesta and we go there 3 times/year. Still has great beaches and they truly are like powdered sugar in your toes. Red tide is another story, but not very often. Can't go wrong at either place, but I am partial to Siesta.
