Penny stuff

Thanks IE!

from Phillips in Herald June 28th:

"PENNY BACK TUESDAY

Right-hander Brad Penny, making a rehabilitation start for Single A Jupiter, did not allow a run in 4 2/3 innings Thursday. He gave up three hits, striking out five and walking none.

''Two of the hits were on changeups,'' said Penny, who threw 70 pitches and topped out at 96 mph. ``I thought I got a better feel for the curveball, and my arm feels strong.''

Penny, out since May 21 with inflammation in his right elbow, is scheduled to return from the disabled list Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs...."

from Barnes in Sun-Sentinel:

The Cubs are last in the NL with a .241 batting average, tied for last in hits with 635 and third in on-base percentage at .318. ... ... Lieber is 0-2 in six starts against the Marlins since 1999. His last victory against them was July 23, 1998 pitching for Pittsburgh. He is 4-4 with a 4.00 ERA in 20 games against the Marlins. For the season, Lieber has walked nine in 15 starts and has three complete games.

Marlins short hops: In the first 18 games of June, the Marlins were 13-5. They outscored opponents 92-64, hit .284 with 18 homers and averaged 5.1 runs per game. They were 2-6 in the final eight games, outscored 46-29, batted .229 with 12 homers and averaged 3.1 runs.

... RF Cliff Floyd entered Monday's game having hit in 11 of his past 13 games. He hit .326 (14 for 43) with three homers, four doubles and 11 RBI over that period. ... 2B Luis Castillo entered Monday night having hit in six consecutive games. He has hit in 42 of his past 45 games. ... 3B Mike Lowell has started all 81 games for the Marlins. He leads the majors with 31 doubles and has 30 multihit games. He leads the NL with 44 extra-base hits.

... Penny makes his first start since May 18 in San Francisco when he left the game after three innings with an inflammation of the right biceps. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 21. Penny is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA against the Cubs. This will be his third start against them.

Given Lieber's history on the 4 days rest and the fact Penny will likely throw no more than 75-80 pitches, may have to look over here; even with the rain, the infield looked rock hard last night. Castillo hit a chopper and it bounced over the 3B's head by 10 feet.

Gordon says he's ready for role call

July 2, 2002

MIAMI--Flash Gordon stopped short of saying he would do windows, but otherwise the reliever insisted he is willing to handle any role that manager Don Baylor gives him when he returns tonight.

Gordon is expected to be activated before the second game of the Florida Marlins series, and rookie Francis Beltran is likely to be returned to Class AA West Tenn.

''We have a bunch of good guys on this team, and the main thing for the team is that I'm here to do whatever I can to help them win,'' Gordon said. ''Whatever it takes, I'm going to try to do all I can.

''My frame of mind is I worked so hard, I'm not going to try to put any more pressure on myself. I believe in what I've accomplished and the people I'm around. I'm just going to have fun being with a group of guys I enjoy. If he puts me in that situation [as closer], he puts me in. If I can help the team in the setup role, or even in the seventh, I will do what I have to do right now.''

Gordon felt good throwing on the side Monday in Florida, and Baylor especially liked his breaking ball.

''His breaking stuff was a lot better today than it was in Houston,'' Baylor said of the last time he saw Gordon throw on the side June 10.

Gordon has been sidelined since tearing a right shoulder muscle in spring training. He hasn't pitched in a major-league game since Sept. 5 last year in Florida, when Preston Wilson's game-winning homer beat the Cubs 7-6.

note:
beltran has already been sent down.
cubs bullpen needs a lefthander----fassero is not the answer and should be waived.

real confidence builder....the truth though.

''It's hard to believe,'' Baylor said of Fassero, who is slipping fast at the age of 39. ''The [only] out he records is baserunning. I don't know how long that inning would have gone.''

no lefty in the setup role against the marlins type lineup can hurt late.
