Tampa Bay Lightning's Marty St. Louis, Vinny Lecavalier urge fans to salute Nikolai Khabibulin

If everything goes as Oilers coach Tom Renney says it will, Nikolai Khabibulin will be in net for Edmonton Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It will be the first time Khabibulin plays at the Tampa Bay Times Forum since Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup final.

There was no immediate word on if the Lightning plans any kind of recognition, but Tampa Bay wing Marty St. Louis, one of two holdovers from the Lightning's Cup team, with Vinny Lecavalier, urged fans to salute one of the key players in the team's championship run.

"I hope they give him an ovation," St. Louis said. "I'd clap."

"Oh, yeah, I definitely would," Lecavalier said of putting his hands together. "He's a big part of Tampa and its history with the Lightning. He definitely deserves it."

It's amazing Khabibulin has gone eight years without playing in Tampa. Part of that is he has spent those years with the Blackhawks and Oilers, teams that have not come to town that often. The first time the Blackhawks came to Tampa during the 2005-06 season after Khabibulin signed with them as a free agent, coach Trent Yawney decided to not play Khabibulin, saying it would be too much of a distraction. Two other times, once with Chicago and once with Edmonton, Khabibulin was injured.

He did, though, did beat the Lightning in November 2007, in Chicago, with 21 saves in a 5-1 win; and in December 20109, in Edmonton, with 38 saves in a 4-3 shootout win.

But his time away from Tampa has not diminished what Khabibulin meant to the Lightning's Stanley Cup run.

St. Louis said he used to love when scoreboard graphics would show another brick being put in a wall -- a tribute to Khabibulin's nickname: the Bulin Wall -- when the goalie would make a big save. Beyond that, St. Louis said, "You don't go anywhere without a goalie. Look at the top teams in the league. That's why we were a top team in the league. We had a good team in front of him but it started with him."

"It seems so long ago," St. Louis added, "especially after a year like this year. I appreciate that year so much with what we've gone through last year, getting this far and not winning it, and this year. It seems so long ago and I owe a lot of that to Habby."

"He's one of those goalies that stole games," Lecavalier said. "I hope the fans give him a nice welcome back. He was a huge part of our team. He's a great goaltender and a great guy. I think the fans definitely will treat him well."

Capitals coach Dale Hunter won?t come right out and say it, but he wants one of his three goaltenders to step up and identify himself as the netminder who will take the Capitals into the playoffs and beyond.

?It?s one of those things where you choose who?s hot,? Hunter said after Wednesday?s practice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.. ?We?re in the playoffs now. There?s no tomorrow. Every game is important.?

With Tomas Vokoun still sidelined with a groin injury, Hunter must choose between 22-year-old Braden Holtby and 23-year-old Michal Neuvirth for Thursday night?s game against the Flyers in Philadelphia.

Holtby, who has spent most of this season with the Hershey Bears, is coming off a 30-save effort in Monday night?s 5-3 win in Detroit, his first NHL win this season in two starts.

Neuvirth suffered a 5-2 setback in Chicago Sunday night and has allowed four goals in each of his last three starts.

So who will be between the pipes in Philly?

Money is on Holtby.

Report: Sedin leaves Canucks, returns to Vancouver for medical testing

According to TSN?s Bob McKenzie, there are some major ramifications from the elbow Daniel Sedin took from Duncan Keith on Wednesday.

McKenzie reports Sedin will miss tonight?s contest in Dallas after being flown back to Vancouver for medical evaluation, and that Keith could be subjected to a disciplinary hearing as soon as Friday:

source:

Sportsnet?s Dan Murphy confirmed McKenzie?s report, tweeting that Canucks assistant Laurence Gilman said Sedin was flying back to Vancouver today to meet with specialists.

Sedin was knocked out of Wednesday night?s affair after an elbow to the head from Keith late in the first period. The situation got more controversial after the game when Sedin?s brother, Henrik, claimed Keith made comments about getting even with Daniel for a hit earlier in the contest.

Sedin, 31, is Vancouver?s second-leading scorer this season (30G-37A-67PTS) and is the reigning Art Ross Trophy winner.

The Wild gets its captain back as Minnesota hosts the Calgary Flames at Xcel Energy Center. Mikko Koivu will return to the lineup for the first time in 15 games since re-aggravating an upper body injury. Overall, Koivu has been out for 23 of the past 27 contests due to the injury.

His return means a number of things for the Wild. First, Minnesota gets its leader back, the man who Head Coach Mike Yeo called a warrior. Second, he?ll center a line with Devin Setoguchi and Dany Heatley, and hopefully spark their games offensively. Finally, players who have had to play outside of their roles will be able to focus more on their particular tasks instead for trying to fill the shoes of Koivu. His biggest impact on the game might be in the energy he brings to the Wild against its division rival.

On Monday, the Wild blanked the Vancouver Canucks, 2-0. Josh Harding played lights out, making 33 saves in the shutout to earn his 10th win of the season. Erik Christensen?s second-period power play goal proved to be the winner and Kyle Brodziak iced the game with an empty netter.

The Flames lost 2-1 in overtime against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday. Matt Stajan scored Calgary?s lone goal. Miikka Kiprusoff made 31 saves in the loss.

Koivu will shake up the lines in a good way:

Setoguchi-Koivu-Heatley
Clutterbuck-Cullen-Christensen
Powe-Brodziak-Johnson

Ortmeyer-Peters-Veilleux

The defensemen will stay the same as Monday:

Scandella-Spurgeon

Gilbert-Stoner
Prosser-Kampfer

After shutting out Vancouver, Harding will get another start. Against the Flames this year he 0-1-0 with a 2.18 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.
