I'm definitely new here, so forgive me if this is second-grade material. Perhaps I am naive, but I always thought that lines moved in order to induce action on the opposite side of a wager. If too many teams bet on the favorite, the spread would increase, in order to induce wagers on the other side.

If that general proposition is true, how great must the disparity be before the line moves? If the lines move too much doesn't the book face the possibility of losing both sets of bets, with an in-between finish?

If that general proposition isn't true, what makes lines move?

For the most part, money moves the line.

Iinjuries, suspensions, etc can also influence the line.

Notice I said "can".

I did not say "will".

There are also "false line moves".

Line moves can be a true indicator of public perception.

But they can, and often times "are", used to deceive the sportsbettor.

The world of eleven to ten is full of trickery.

You must be keen.

My old friend buddy has taught me alot in this respect.... ;)

Take for example the Tennessee game this weekend. The concenus says that the majority of people are on Tennessee, yet the line has moved in the opposite direction. :com:

To me, that means one of 2 things. 1.) The books themselves are trying to induce more action on Tennessee (not likely in my opinion). or 2.) Although the majority of the "public" (i.e. small bettors) are on Tennessee, the "sharps" (i.e. larger bets) are on La. Laff.

There are a few examples of this each week where the majority of bets (mostly small bets) may be on one team, but the minority of bets (larger bets) are on the other team and thus the line moves opposite of what the concenus numbers say that it should....

Just my 2 cents. :)

edit; Oh, and by the way, Tennessee "controls their own destiny" in the SEC East. Just kidding. I know how you love that phrase. LOL :mj07:
