Wayne Gretzky's version of the domino effect has things falling into place for the Coyotes.

Not wanting to overload one line and possible hinder another, he has tinkered this season, looking for balance. And when center Joel Perreault was recalled from San Antonio, he gave Gretzky the flexibility he was seeking, as he was able to revamp the lines.

He likes what he sees now with Perreault centering the first line with rookie Peter Mueller and captain Shane Doan. As a result, center Steven Reinprecht has now formed a solid presence on the ice with Radim Vrbata.

"Rhino has really been good with Vrbata," Gretzky said. "But we wouldn't be able to do that if Perreault hadn't been able to step in and play at the level he's played. We're really impressed by how he's developed as a player, how hard he's played. "I think more importantly, he's worked pretty hard the last six months on power skating. It's a great example, it doesn't matter how old you are, you can still work on your skating. He put a lot of time into it, it's clear. He's a stronger, better skater than he was last year."

Perreault, 24, has 5 goals and 10 points since his recall on from San Antonio.

He says he has worked a lot on his skating but that getting a lot of playing time in the minors, 25 to 30 minutes a game, aided his development, and that getting ice time in the NHL has boosted his confidence.

"Every hockey player, if he comes into a big part of the game and when you know you can make a turnover or mistake you know you're going back the next shift, you try more stuff on the ice and playing with two good players helps.

"Shane has been around for a long time, and Peter is a good young player. Everytime we go on the ice, we know we have a chance to score a goal, and think we've been playing well on both sides."

His mind-set got another boost when Gretzky made him No. 3 in the shootout order.

"Players like to go one-on-one against the goalie, so it shows a lot of confidence by the coach," he said.

Doan emphasized that Perault has played big minutes in key situation and has scored, along with getting big hits.

"He's played physical, and he's done the things that are tough to do. His overall game, he's just playing with confidence, that's really it. "Timing is huge for everybody. He's been put in a situation that's been good for him. Petey and I enjoy playing with him. I think he's definitely more noticeable, but he's definitely getting more minutes in key situations."

Doan surging

Doan, the NHL's third-leading scorer in January who scored the Coyotes' first goal against Nashville on Monday.

"He's been really good," Gretzky said. "It's one of the best stretches I've seen him play. He's playing with a great deal of confidence right now, energy, and he's physical. When Shane's more physical and has a physical presence, he scores more points, he scores more goals."

Coyotes update: Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov gets a break, and Mikael Tellqvist will start. Right wing Fredrik Sjostrom, who was a healthy scratch Saturday night at Nashville, will be in the lineup, and coach Wayne Gretzky was not sure who would sit out. The Coyotes are 10th in the Western Conference and can jump to eighth with a victory.

Avalanche update: Colorado is seventh in the West. Leading scorer Paul Stastny (17 goals, 32 assists, 49 points) has been on injured reserve since Jan. 19 after an appendectomy. Also out are Joe Sakic (hernia) and Ryan Smyth (ankle). In a 6-4 win over St. Louis on Saturday, T.J. Hensick and Ben Guite each scored two goals.

Avalanche report: Theodore improving

Goalie Jose Theodore, who was sidelined for the past two games because of back spasms, is feeling better, but his playing status remains day to day.

Peter Budaj is expected to start tonight for the Avalanche, which didn't practice Sunday.

Right wing Marek Svatos didn't play Saturday night at St. Louis because of a groin injury, and he also is listed as day to day.

Hensick contributing

Rookie center T.J. Hensick, who scored the first goal of his NHL career Wednesday, against Chicago, scored two goals Saturday in a 6-4 victory at St. Louis.

"It's a good feeling," said Hensick, who was Colorado's third-round draft choice in 2005.

"It's good to help this team offensively. I think at some point in time as this learning process continues, I'll be able to help this team a little more offensively."

Hensick was recalled Tuesday by the Avalanche after his four-point effort Jan. 28 at the 2008 AHL All-Star Game in Binghamton, N.Y.

Numbers game

9-5 margin in goals scored by the Coyotes against the Avalanche in two wins this season. The Avalanche's most recent loss to the Coyotes was 5-2 on Jan. 2 at the Pepsi Center.

Etc.

* Colorado is third in the NHL in even-strength goals, with 115, trailing only Ottawa and Detroit. But the Avalanche is 13th in overall goal scoring, mostly because the Colorado power play has produced only 29 goals.

* The Avalanche power play ranks 29th in the league, at 13.5 percent. Colorado has gone 5-for-53 in the past 17 games on the power play.

* NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is scheduled to attend the game tonight at the Pepsi Center.

He said it

"The power play has been a problem the whole year. We're not scoring enough goals. We got one Saturday night. At least we showed some signs of progress."

Milan Hejduk, Avalanche right wing, who leads the team with six power-play goals.

* Notes: Colorado has lost both games it has played against Phoenix this season, one of which was a shootout setback. . . . The Avalanche is 18-8-1 this season at the Pepsi Center. . . . Doan has eight goals and 20 points in the past 14 games, and Vrbata, a former Avalanche player, has four goals and seven points in the past four games after missing the previous three games because of a groin injury. . . . Phoenix is 19-0-0 this season when scoring four goals or more. . . . Mueller is third among the league's top rookie scorers. . . . Hejduk leads the Avalanche in shots on goal, with 124, Svatos' 21.8 percent shooting rate is tops on the team and Brett Clark's average time on ice, 23:17, leads the team.
