Lipscomb proved in its regular season finale Saturday that it is not a one-man team.
A day after senior forward Malcolm Smith left the program, the Bisons got double figure scoring from five players in a 95-74 victory over Kennesaw State at Allen Arena. Smith?s twin brother, Martin, was one of three players who finished with 12 points. Josh Williams had a team-high 19 and Chad Lang added 11.
Lipscomb finished the regular season 7-7 in conference play (13-16 overall) and earned the fifth seed in the Atlantic Sun tournament, which begins Tuesday. The Bisons will plat at Northern Kentucky (also 13-16, 7-7) in the quarterfinals.
The Bisons, who have not won a conference tournament contest since 2009, were the No. 5 seed last year as well. All-time they are 4-10 at the event.
?It?s exciting to turn the page and have everybody start over,? second-year coach coach Casey Alexander said, according to the school?s athletics website. ?It?s not going to be easy whether we?re playing at home Tuesday or not. We?ve got a real challenge ahead of us.?
Malcolm Smith reached 1,000 career points during last season?s A-Sun tournament quarterfinal loss, 89-86 in double overtime at East Tennessee State. He had team-highs with 24 points and 12 rebounds in that contest.
The 6-foot-5 forward started 22 of the 25 games he played this season was the team?s second-leading scorer at 14.5 points per game and leading rebounder at 5.1 per contest.
He ended his career with 1,360 points, tied with Tracey Sales for 22nd on the program?s all-time scoring list.
?Malcolm has had a tremendous career at Lipscomb and we're disappointed to see it end when he's so close to the finish line,? Alexander said. ?We wish him the best and have confidence that he'll be a success story after graduating in May.?
