Has anyone been watching this? They moved the fences back 25 feet over the last few years to 225feet and kids are still hitting 300 foot bombs...One 12 year old is 6'2'' 225lbs.....:scared

Pitchers are tossing 70-75 MPH Fastballs at 46 feet to the plate the equivalent of 95-100 MPH in MLB..... Some kids have taken serious shots on hits back up the middle....At some point one of these kids is going to be seriously hurt pitching so close....

Josh, what age group do you Ump for?

5 year olds through 22 year olds

I called the PONY 13 year old Super Regional this year - played on 280 foot fences. No less than 15 homers in 12 games. What's even more impressive is that they have gone to bbcor bats which have taken the pop out of most bats. The bbcor bats have changed the college game and many coached are looking for ways to increase their budgets to make the move to wood.

At some point they're going to need to move the mound back at the LL level....There is very little reaction time.....One of these pitchers is going to get killed.....

Josh,

What do you have to do to get to be a MLB umpire?

pro school - Wendelstedt or Evans umpire school

Wendelstedt produces more MLB umpires. I know umpires who have gone to both schools. They look for young umpires, no wives/girlfriends, that way there isn't sentimental travel issue. One kid went to Evans at 19 and was calling short A ball in Arizona before his 20th birthday. He's in AA now. Baseball not drinking.

If selected, you go to a minor league school - start out calling short A ball, then work your way up. Wake for a MLB ump to die and then hope you know the right person.

College is done differently. You go through your High School Association and hope that you get to work with a college guy or have a college association guy see you call. Then you get signed up with their association which bid contracts with different conferences.

Both are good ol boy systems

A former coach of mine refereed in the WHA and NHL. Lots of travel. Players get to play half their games at home. Umps and refs dont have a home. Throw in Spring Training and maybe playoffs, thats 7months on the road. You may get a few series at home, but thats it.
