Good Lord, it's even better than the first. Picking up where last year's cliffhanger left off, Towers finds chosen Hobbits Frodo and Sam continuing their treacherous nature hike to Mordor, while the rest of the fractured Fellowship walk into a kingdom under siege. Besides more breathtaking shots of New Zealand, er, Middle Earth, there's a quicker moving story, wilder creatures, higher tension and that deliciously wicked computer-animated Gollum. There's plenty of blood and guts, too, when it all comes to a head during the gloriously choreographed battle at Helm's Deep, which, yes, blows away the CGI-heavy Attack of the Clones climax. Once again, Rings simply Towers above the rest.

Go See It

Can't wait. I read a review in today's paper which echoed your comments. It's unusual that the second part of anything really outshines the first but apparently this is the exception.

myron, my sentiments exactly :D

For both LOTRs, i was dragged by friends to see it and both times i fell asleep. yesterday, i fell asleep thru the first hour, then couldn't stay comfortable so i watched the last 2 hours. i hafta say, it did keep my attention much longer than the first one. I kept daydreaming and even took a break and walked aroundn the cinema during that one. i just don't like fantasy or sci fi movies of any sort w/ creatures and costumes and stuff like that. the battle scene was pretty cool, though

Good to hear, Anthony. Can't wait to see the movie. Watching it on New Year's Eve with the wifey before we tear it up in downtown Chicago to bring in 2003. Loved the 1st one, the shortest 3 hour movie I've ever seen.

My wife didn't like the first, and didn't see the second with me, so I understand the "zzzz's".

However, I loved it. Peter Jackson is really writing the book on how to make the big budget entertainment movies for the future.

When I was younger and nerdier, I was a great fan of the books, giving them several readings. I'm very happy with the translation to film. The helicopter filming of the landscapes are amazing. I would have spent more time on the Ents (personal faves from the book) rather than Helm's Deep, but that's just my opinion.

If you liked the first, I imagine you'd have to like this one. If not, then this one won't have much for you either.

You should probably rename this thread (IF you haven't seen--don't open) because I want to talk about it more. I saw it last night and thought it accomplished everything that the new Star Wars missed on.

Gollup compared to Ja Ja Biggs is the finest example. Ja Ja Biggs all but ruined The Phantom Menace--to the point where I did not go watch Attack of the Clones. I still find it hard to believe that I did not go see the movie in the theater, but I still have not made an attempt to see it since. I think the movies have been ruined by dumbing down the story.

Anyway, LOTR Two Towers is an incredible tribute to epic fantasy movies. It's amazing how much like a book the movie unfolds. Something that is nearly impossible to do, but done extremely well in this case. Of course, not all points and characters can be hit, but I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars for what it is trying to accomplish.

Sorry about that. I guess not being from Middle Earth I don't appreciate the film that much :).

In the meantime the next couple of weekends have a slew of good films I want to see, especially The Gangs of New York, Chicago and Catch Me if You Can.

Rottentomatoes.com...The Twin Towers has 120 favorable reviews, 3 bad. One of the best ratings I've seen for any movie.

You couldn't pay me the price of a movie ticket, free soda, popcorn, candy, nachos, and an icee to watch "Catch Me If You Can". Ugh.

Saw LOTR last night with the wife before tearing up the town. Incredible movie, IMHO. The action was fantastic, and the special effects and graphics blows away any other movies I've seen. Cannot wait for the finale. I hope it's not like noall said, though, since my expectation for the finale will be way high.

Agree with dawgball, that thing annoys the crap out of me. Same reason I waited for it to come out on videos to watch the Clones, which pales in comparison to LOTR.

The movie I'm anxiously awaiting is the sequel to The Matrix, what a visual treat that one will be.

On the course!
I never saw the first one, and I never read the books, but I have to say the movie was okay by me.

I thought the special effects were the best I've seen. (Except for those trees! They were straight out of the Wizard of Oz!)
