My time in Vegas this year is rapidly winding down, 6 more days to hit the elusive Royal Flush before I return to Oklahoma just in time to dodge tornadoes.
My wife and I tried Lotus a few years back and we were under-whelmed.
On recommendation of a neighbor, we tried the buffet, it was YUK.
EVERYONE raves about this place for Thai food; my brother-in-law is in town and wanted Thai, so we bit the bullet and decided to give it another shot and order off the very extensive menu...here http://www.allmenus.com/nv/las-vegas/278620-lotus-of-siam/menu/
Upon entering, we discovered the buffet has been ditched all together, I chuckled at that.
We sat down ordered very basic Pad Thai with shrimp, pineapple fried rice with shrimp, basic sweet and sour chicken and rice, and a helping of sea bass.
The Thai waiter did not ask us how hot we wanted it, many Thai restaurants ask on a scale of 1-10 how spiced do you want it.
We went to Phuket Island Thailand back in the late 80's when there was a couple hotels. I discovered peppers that would bring an elephant to its knees in discomfort.
I think the waiter looked at us and figured out very little heat was needed.
The food was outstanding....the shrimp was prawn size, the pad thai was to die for, perfect in every respect, fried egg, peanuts, some veggies, perfectly sauced...wonderful.
The shrimp pineapple fried rice was seasoned lightly with curry powder and in combination with the pineapples,it was very, very good.
The sweet and sour chicken was simple yet extremely tasty in a house made light sauce with pineapples, peppers, onions, tomatoes. The chicken actually melted in your mouth, made from the tenderloins.
The sea bass OMG was a huge portion steamed and covered in a house sauce I could not identify along with papaya, mild chiles, crushed peanuts mixed with lime juice....it was to quote a TV food critic, "a virtual explosion of flavors"
We shared the dishes and had a couple small boxes of leftovers, there was enough food for 5.
The total tab for this feast for 3 was about $65
Lotus of Siam gets my future Thai business.....it is in the same area as another personal favorite, Cornish Pasty Company, just East of SLS off of Sahara. (we are going there today, as we count down our best of best favorite restaurants before leaving)
LOTUS of Siam is very much worth the short cab ride from the strip.
