not sure if you watched any of the ohio/niu game, but ohio confirmed what i suspected. im kicking myself for even giving them another chance. theyll TOTALLY quit. nobody even congratulates their teammates after a shot. esterkamp is just jacking aimless 3's. hunter is playing selfishly. theyre a MESS. your original instinct on niu was dead on. sorry if i swayed you in any way. to watch that game was painful. no energy or life. they were out of the game in the first 5:00. it was 18-6 right out of the gate. then it was 49-29. ohio went on a 7-0 run to get within 13, and then niu went on a 11-2 run to bust it open for good. nothing is worse than being out of a game before the first media timeout. ohio has totally mailed in the season.

whats funny (like i said, im not sure if you watched the game since you went to the toledo gm) but niu, for as well as theyre playing and as nice an arena as theyve got, drew NO FANS TONIGHT. so it wasnt like ohio got flustered by the crowd. the crowd was dead the whole night in a half empty arena and ohio still shot 22% from the field.

how can niu not draw better in that convo center? kinda strange.

gman2, might have been the weather. The Wisconsin game just north of there was only half full due to a winter storm. Just a guess.

yeaaa i noticed that when they played ball st. NOBODY there...WTF. Like they have anything else better to do in DeKalb. Thats why when Toledo renovates Savage Hall....they wont have 10K seats like EMU and NIU...gonna have 7K and if the programs grows....so will the seating :D

HELLAH:
you bring up a great point actually.
when these schools open up new arenas, they often think "bigger is better" and put in too MANY SEATS.
and then those same schools end up negating their home court advantage because the place only is 1/3 of the way full or 1/2 full and the fans arent close enough to the court and there isnt an "intimate feeling" to the setting.
cleveland state has one of the nicest facilities in the NATION (not sure if youve ever been to the convocation center here) but its an awesome facility. almost like a mini-gund arena. yet csu plays before an average of 1,100 fans a game, the lowest home attendance in the horizon league. the only time they even packed it was back when the fab five came here to play a decade ago. even when butler comes to town, they draw about 2,000 or 2,500 TOPS and even then, the place isnt even half full. sure they do concerts and stuff in the arena, but sportswise, they have zero home court edge- even though their facility kicks a$$

buddy:
i didnt expect sonny to play. that made a difference, but still not enough of a difference to get drilled like that. barrett is a guy who has one of the best stories about him around. just a phenomenal guy because of what hes doing for him mom. a true class act. but not really a big-time contributor to the team.

big daddy:
you might be right. weather here is bad, so im sure chicago area and upper illinois isnt much better (probably worse). but that arena was empty. still kinda surprised, considering their success

gman - you might be getting the shit we just had. A TOTAL white-out...it took me an hour to go from the University to my HOUSE. I live 15 minutes from the University. When I say ZERO...i mean ZERO Visibility. I mean it got to the point where I had to pull in a parking lot(I guess it was a parking lot) and waited 30 minutes to die down...and even then it was still white...but not as bad. Careful in the morning my friend....

Have not seen the total yet but Akron- Marshall should get close to 180 points tonight. if Blackshear and Tarver are on their game both teams who are not noted for their fine defense could score in the '90s.

Over Bigtime!!

Hellah-

Got to believe Kent is a gift tonight. I wonder if Kent took NIU lightly, like everyone has. Didn't even have to sweat out the final 10 minutes in DeKalb last night.

You are the MAC-daddy.

Cardinals will face one of MACs best
By DOUG ZALESKI
dzaleski@thestarpress.com
MUNCIE ? A strong case could be made for Brandon Hunter of Ohio, Chris Kaman of Central Michigan and Antonio Gates of Kent State being the three most difficult players for teams to match up against in the Mid-American Conference.

Hunter, a 6-foot-7 power forward, had 33 points and 13 rebounds last week in a game against Ball State. Kaman, a 7-foot center who will play against the Cardinals on Feb. 19 and March 8, has averaged 24.9 points and 12.4 rebounds during a stretch of seven straight double-doubles.

As good as Hunter and Kaman have been, Ball State coach Tim Buckley thinks Gates is better. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound senior power forward, who is as agile as he is strong, will lead Kent State (17-3, 10-2 MAC East) against Ball State (10-11, 5-6 MAC West) at 7 p.m. today in Worthen Arena.

"In my opinion, they have the best player in the conference in Antonio Gates," Buckley said.

"He can run the point and beat you off the dribble, he can come off the pick-and-roll, or he can post you up," he said. "He might be the most difficult matchup the MAC has seen in some time. He's right there with a Bonzi Wells-type guy, and maybe a little better ballhandler at the same stage than Bonzi was."

The left-handed Gates started his career at Michigan State as a tight end in football.

He transferred to Eastern Michigan and played one season of basketball, averaging 10.2 points and 7.4 rebounds in 1999-2000. He attended College of the Sequoias in California (he didn't play basketball) for a year before transferring to Kent State for the 2001-02 season.

Gates helped Kent State reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament last year. He had 14 points and six rebounds as the Golden Flashes beat the Cardinals 81-54 last season.

"I remember him last year being very aggressive," said Cardinals forward Rob Owens, who could be one of the players assigned to guard Gates. "He scored on a lot of slashing moves. If I guard him, I have to keep him in front of me and not let him body me up."

Gates ranks sixth in the MAC in scoring (21.0), seventh in rebounding (8.1) and seventh in assists (4.2).

Kent State is 27-3 in MAC games the past two seasons. The Golden Flashes are 9-1 on the road this year, and they have won 13 consecutive road games against conference opponents.

The Cardinals also will be tested by a team that leads the nation in three-point shooting (.428) and is second field-goal percentage (.506).

A Ball State victory would be its sixth in eight games and even its overall and MAC records.

"I give our guys a lot of credit; they're the only reason we've come out of this thing," Buckley said. "They've continued to work hard and buy in and work to get better."

This article shows the most deserving respect being shown to Antonio Gates. They exactly tell you way he`s so good....with his shot, ball handling, and court smarts.

Probable starters
Ball State
Matt McCollom, So., G, 6-2
Chris Williams, Sr., G, 6-3
Rob Owens, Jr., F, 6-7
Cam Echols, Jr., F, 6-8
Kevin Cates, Fr., C, 6-9

Kent State
Anthony Wilkins, Sr., G, 6-7
DeAndre Haynes, Fr., G, 6-2
Eric Haut, Jr., G, 6-0
Antonio Gates, Sr., F, 6-5
Nate Gerwig, So., C, 6-9

Clearly you can see Kent St runs a guard set offense and has a size and speed advantage. Is that a problem for Ball St??? YES - Here`s why....

Anytime this season Ball St played a team where the offense revolves around the guard...they have TERRIBLY struggled.

Against Dayton Ramod Marshall got 23 points and was 3-5 from 3 point range....

Against Xavier David West rippppped them. They contained him in the 1st half...but in the 2nd half...different story. He had 24 points!!! And almost all of them were in the 2nd half...he was 10-11 from the field

Against Indiana...well this isnt real fair....but Bracey Wright really made a name for himself thanks to the Ball St game. Wright scored 13 points in a decisive four-minute stretch, tied a career-high with 31 points and hit five 3-pointers

Against Derrick Tarver scored 33 points, including a pair of crucial free throws in the closing seconds, as Akron beat Ball State 105-104 in overtime Saturday despite 48 points from the Cardinals' Chris Williams.

Okay.....I think you all get my point....Ball St has a weak defense. Everytime they run zone, it just seems like they get back too late...I dunno that might just be me. This Ball St team gets into foul trouble when facing adversity....Someone like Antonio Gates is gonna drive the lane and get Cameron Echols or Matt McCollom into foul trouble.

Now granted Ball St has been playing very well at home and Ball St does draw great crowds and have great fan support...but Kent St has been tested on the road last year and this year. The leadership on this team is beyond what you`d expect...they play with emotion, with heart, and with a sense of urgency. Now yes I know NIU beat them at home....but NIU just wouldnt miss really and Kent was. When I said I like Bates on Haut, I knew it was gonna come in...and thats what happened. Tonight, Ball St doesnt have a great defensive player like Bates from NIU...instead they`ll have Chris Williams on Haut. And I know for a fact Ball St will run zone because neither Williams or Matt Mccollom will be able to guard Gates....

Now the last few MAC nights....Vegas has set odd lines....Northern -1 to +2 at Buffalo....CMU -1 to +2 against WMU.....last night with EMU...and tonight with Kent. Luckly we have hit 2 out of the 3 and I say 3 out of 4 is gonna happen....

Flashes' MAC streak in serious jeopardy
***KSU has won last 13 road games in MAC play***
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal staff writer

KENT - In the midst of their success the past five seasons, Kent State has piled up some impressive winning streaks.

But one of the stats hidden is the way the Golden Flashes respond to losing, which they did Saturday to Northern Illinois 67-61. Kent State has lost back-to-back games just twice in the last 165 games. The team has also won 13-consecutive road games in the Mid-American Conference.

Both of those streaks will be in serious jeopardy tonight in Muncie, Ind., when the Flashes take on a streaking Ball State team in what is shaping up to be a defining week of the season.

After losing to the Huskies, the Flashes' (17-3, 10-2 MAC) lead in the overall standings was reduced to one game. After playing five games in 11 days, the team embarks on a four-games-in-eight-day stretch that includes visits to Ball State tonight and Ohio on Saturday.

``Nobody in the conference plays a run of games like we have -- by next week we'll have played 15 league games and some other teams will have played just 12,'' Kent State coach Jim Christian said. ``But nobody is going to feel sorry for us.''

Ball State (10-11, 5-6) lost its first four conference games while adjusting to the loss of star forward Theron Smith, who is out for the season after not completely healing from off-season knee surgery. Since then, the Cardinals have found the form that had them picked to win the MAC West, winning five of their last seven games and four in a row at home.

Cardinals senior guard Chris Williams leads the conference with a 23.4 scoring average. He scored 39 points in Ball State's victory over Miami on Sunday.

``Williams is one of the few guys in this league that can score 50 points on any night,'' Christian said.

Gates closing in

Kent State senior forward Antonio Gates needs just five points to reach 1,000 in his two-year career at Kent State.
