This is rapdily becoming a very unfunny matter. The problem with annoucing a preumptive positive is it may turn out to be negative after all. But once this gets out, people go crazy. Already, Japan and South Korea have immediately banned all imports of US beef - total loss to our economy $1.5Billion. They were the #1 and #3 importers of US beef. Thats just in the past hour. McDonalds stock, falling 5%, expect others to follow. This is one of those things that may seem minor at first glance, but the effects are going to keep rippling throughout this week and the coming months.

Ace,

after one case in Canada, the US immediately banned all imports of Cnadian beef as a safety issue, bringing the Canadian industry to its knees. It is very serious. Is the US banning all exports now as a safety issue?

Exactly, forgot to mention that point about Canada, lest people call Japan/SKorea alarmist, it is our policy to do the exact same thing here. Just interesting to hear as this comes out how woefully behind the US was to the rest of the world in terms of testing for mad cow. In Britain they test every cow for bse, here we do nothing like that. Will be interesting and scary at the same time to see how this plays out in the next few days.

yep, I have personal knowledge of this. I have friends who are cattle farmers in southern SK. Luckily, they were able to keep their stock and not dependant on selling at the normal time. They have enough grain to feed through the winter and then sell. Many Canadians don't have that luxury and had to sell for 1/5th the value to Canadian stockyards. There were also a lot of out of work cowboys in the States as much of their business is from Canadian cattle. Haven't Japan and Korea already stopped beef shipments from the United States?

We may be taking beef from Canada. But theres little chance any live cows come across that border with out being tested. This will be trouble. Like the man said last night. If they found one there is a few more. They will start with state of Washington. Nothing going to come out of there. And after listening to this fellow on all the news channnels last night. Sounds like there are ways to catch and control this before its to late. But it takes money and beef price would have to be higher. Guess what's about to happen. And as said above many foks could go under from this. But I have a hunch the government will step in to help those who need it. This is not like jobs for China. They just cant ship-em out.

US still not taking live cattle, and only certain beef cuts from cattle under a certain age. All from one case here....

The industry has been decimated. I live in rural Southern Alberta, cattle country, and farmers have had a very stressful year, selling their cattle for cents on the dollar because they can't afford feed.

Be very afraid (economically) of this development

PS I believe it was about 6 months before any beef at all was allowed to cross the border....lots of time for ranchers to go broke....
