To Madjack and All Others up East,

The wife and I are planning a trip with the kids and my parents to go back east to see the leaves change and do a bunch of sightseeing and we are going way North (New England States)so.........

by the way about 12 days if what we are going to have!!!

1.) When exactly is the best time to go? I have heard late August
or even in October, but what is the best time? THis is what
we really need to know!!

2.) We are going to go to D.C. to see the sites, Boston, etc. but
what are some things we can't miss up that way?

3.) My mom grew up in the Pittsburgh area so she knows some
stuff that way but what about the Vermont, N.H., Maine area?

Thanks for responding and looking forward to your answers

Anyone that knows chime in because I would love to get some good responses!!

Thanks

Leland

P.S. Hey Madjack I never got that Mug for the PPPP contest last year but don't worry about it!!
:)

A good rule of thumb on the leaves changing is that the peak time is usually around Columbus Day in October. The peak will change due to the weather but the best time is usually Columbus Day weekend in northern New England.

You could of seen the Old Man in The Mountain but he fell off couple of months ago.

Don't know much about New England states, but I have travelled quite a bit on the East Coast south of there. Asheville, NC is one of the best places to see leaves changing. The Biltmore Mansion is there. There are great bed and breakfasts everywhere in that town.

Driving down I-75 is a beautiful drive during peak change.

Have a great time!

Leland feel free to drop me a line, I am from NH and have been up there a half dozen times already this year. If you are going to be driving through NH in the Fall, absolutely make sure there is not a Nascar event at the NHIS, else you will be sharing the road with 100,000 other people. My personal favorite for folliage viewing is the Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough (www.castlesprings.com). Really depends on what you are looking to do and how much time you have. Also I live in DC now so if you need help with anything here let me know.

Make sure you spend a day in Lancaster County, Pa. and the Poconos if driving through Pa. The best time for foilage is the 3rd week in October, about the 14th to 28th. Hope this helps.

Good point Bob, though again (having gone to college for 4 years in Lancaster) that time of year is crazy with crowds there. Alumni Weekend is usually that same time, so add that in with the buses full of people going to the outlets and such, its a zoo. I can recommend a lot of great restaraunts there if you do go.

I guess though that time of year any popular place is by definition going to be a mob scene.

Hudson Valley area.....NY
Work your trip around an Army game at West Point.Even your kids would love it regardless if there not fans.
Can't beat seeing Army play in beautiful Michie Stad.Oct is when the leaves turn orange. The site is breathtaking. In the AM you can see the cadets parade. Many things for the kids to do.
I might be at the game.Let me know.I go to 2 or 3 a yr.
Hudson Valley during the fall is unreal.FDR's house,The Point,Vandys house,Washington Irvings Sleepy Hollow, and many more.
The valley is between the foot of the Catskills and the Schwangums Mountains. When it thunders in the summer here we know its Rip Van Winkles little guys "bowling".

Also if you go to an Army game make sure you put your bet down against them. That makes the game so much sweeter.
Good luck
