It's time to take a look at how the golf forum fared last year ... :0corn

If someone had staked 1 unit on each of the plays posted in the golf forum in 2013 they would have recorded a profit of 121.08 units. What a great effort for the entire forum to be in profit over a whole year!

Jordan Spieth rolled his putts and Tiger Woods rolled his eyes.

The future of golf went up against its past on a cloudy Friday at Torrey Pines, and there would be no turning back of clocks.

Spieth fired a 9-under par 63 on the tamer North course to claim the halfway lead at the Farmers Insurance Open while his playing companion was left to bemoan bad luck and make the cut -- at an event he's won seven times -- by a single stroke.

"The kid's got talent," Woods, 38, said of the 20-year-old Texan.

"He hits it a long way, phenomenal putter.

"He made a boatload of putts today from the 10- to 20-foot range and that's on poa (annua) greens, that's not easy to do.

"But he was pouring them in there. He had speed to them, too.

"He putted with a lot of confidence."

There may just have been a tinge of envy in Woods' words.

Who else used to roll them in from 20 feet on bumpy greens where three-footers weren't safe?

"He didn't make a lot of putts today," Spieth said of Woods.

And, yes, Spieth acknowledged he did hit a few too firmly.

But there's an abandon in youth.

So what if the putt rolls three feet by?

"I was really confident, and I was feeling good with the putter," Spieth said with a shrug.

I asked Woods if he remembered being young and banging in putts.

"You haven't experienced enough yet, you know?" he said.:SIB

"When you get out there and the more years go on, the more you say, you know, where's Indio, or where's Pacific or where's Atlantic, it's got to be breaking that way.

"Things of that nature do start happening as you get a little bit older."

Until one day you're Johnny Miller and you end up in the booth.

Woods isn't there, of course, but Spieth is an eternity from such dark places.

His is a star rising at incredible speed.

It was here, last year, that he made his debut as a professional.

He was nervous and missed the cut by two shots.

Since then he's finished second four times, won, and was part of the victorious U.S. Presidents Cup team.

"It seems like three or four years ago, it really does with all of last year, what it encompassed," he said.

There's a confidence to Spieth, but he manages to avoid the trap of cockiness that befalls many young prodigious talents.:0corn

When he said he "wasn't intimidated by any means" in being paired -- for the first time in a tournament -- with Woods, it wasn't a slight on the world No. 1.:mj07:

"I grew up watching him, obviously, just like I did with a lot of these veterans out here, so I've idolized him, watched him win majors," he said.

"It's exciting to finally be paired with him, (but) we played a practice round at the Presidents Cup and spent a good amount of time (together), so it wasn't like the first time I ever met him."

When he says his goal is to break all of Woods' records, it's a reflection of his desire to be the best.:0074

And he knows what a daunting task Woods has left him.

"It's a joke to be honest, 79 (career wins)," he said of Woods' career total on the PGA Tour.

"I mean, after winning once I've got four seconds; it's not easy to win, not easy to close out even if you do play well enough to get to the top of the leaderboard in the final round."

Woods, meanwhile, knows he will need something absurdly special if he is to win a ninth professional tournament (he also won the 2008 US Open here) at Torrey Pines.

On Friday, he needed something in the mid-60s on the North and could only muster a one-under-par 71.

Astonishingly, he played the eight par fives over the first two days in one over.

Last year, when he won, he played them in nine under par through two rounds.

"I wouldn't say I was rusty," he said.

"I was a yard off, foot off, all day, and it was one of those frustrating rounds because balls were landing in the fairway, running a foot in the rough and then I couldn't be aggressive, couldn't get after some of these flags and consequently my score reflected that."

And, he said, he "stubbed my foot by three putting twice out there."

As is his wont, however, he's not waving any white flags yet.

"I mean, I've done it before," he said, recalling he won in 1999 after making the cut on the number.:0corn

"I went and shot 62 65.":mj07:

Back then he could really roll them in from 20 feet on these bumpy greens.

Phil Mickelson withdraws because of back pain

Phil Mickelson withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open on Friday night because of muscle pain in his back.

Mickelson shot a 1-over 73 on the South Course at Torrey Pines in the second round, leaving him eight strokes behind leader Jordan Spieth. Mickelson said after the round that he feared getting into bad habits by altering his swing to keep his back from hurting. This is hometown tournament and he said he wanted to keep playing.
His management company released a statement late Friday evening that Mickelson had decided to withdraw. Mickelson said he would talk to doctors to figure out the best course of action.
Mickelson is to defend his title next week in the Phoenix Open.
"I love this tournament and I want to play here. I love playing in San Diego and this is a place where I grew up playing, so I really want to play," Mickelson said after his round. "And part of me also says that I'm getting in bad habits. And if I hit it in this rough here, I've really got an issue because I've got to swing awfully hard to get it out and it jars it. So I'm a little torn right now on the best plan of action."
He was eight shots behind Jordan Spieth.

The Question: Is Gambling In Golf Good Or Bad?

THE DUKE OF WINDSOR
Friendly betting adds interest to golf, but outright gambling is bad for the game. I never play for more than $5 a side. That is enough of a wager and it gives us the chance to jolly each other about our bad shots. Very often, my side bet is $2, and nothing at all when I'm playing too badly.

REAR ADMIRAL ROBERT PIRIE, U.S.N.
Commander, Carrier Division Six
Gambling, of course, adds an element of interest to golf, but no one should gamble for more than he can afford to lose with good grace. In other words, betting should not spoil the sport and fun that makes golf the great game it is. When that happens, gambling loses what little virtue it has.

ROBERT S. MILLER
Portland, Ore. Attorney
Bad. Golf should be played for fun and social contacts, sportsmanship and friendship. This spring I traveled 3,000 miles from Oregon for the fun of playing, as an amateur, with the top pros in the Sam Snead Festival at Greenbrier. If it were not for the fun, I wouldn't waste the green fees.

WALTER J. TUOHY
President, Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad
Gambling is extremely bad for golf to the extent it goes in the Calcuttas. These Calcuttas have already done a lot of harm, and they will bring additional disrepute to the game if they are allowed to continue. I bet a dollar Nassau or two. I enjoy winning a friendly bet like that.

E. TRUMAN WRIGHT
Vice-president, Greenbrier Hotel
Bad. Gambling potentially can do golf greater harm than anything else. I'm referring specifically to gambling like that in Calcuttas, for prizes that run into the thousands. A side bet of a couple of dollars for fun is O.K., but large side bets can cause a lot of bad feeling.

JOCK McLEAN
Oil operator and international society and sports figure
I certainly wouldn't call it bad unless dishonesty is involved, as there was in a Calcutta a short time ago. It's up to every individual. To me, it's neither good nor bad. If I want to bet someone $8 million or $8, that's my business and his business. There's nothing ideologically bad about it.

RAYMOND E. SALVATI
President, Island Creek Coal Co.
Prior to the scandals, I thought controlled gambling was wonderful. Now I feel that Calcuttas should be banned. What happened before can happen again, for $50,000 in gambling prizes is a great temptation. In a group, a $20 side bet starts a lot of ribbing and adds to the fun.

PAUL M. BUTLER
Chairman, Democratic National Committee
Bad. Golf is a grand sport for the millions of devotees. It should not be fouled up by gambling. Small side bets among friends for fun are fine, but heavy betting is harmful. Golf should be for relaxation. How can a man who wants to get away from his problems relax if he has a large bet on the game?

DEL RENTZEL
Chairman, Slick Airways, ex-Chairman, Civil Aeronautics Board
There has to be some degree of gambling in golf for added interest. Whether it's good or bad depends on the scale. In a friendly game, gambling is wonderful. However, I'm glad to see the Calcutta on the way out. It became an outright gambling device and was not good for the game.

JAMES M. SYMES
President, Pennsylvania Railroad
Golf wouldn't be any fun without a little gambling between the amateurs playing for fun. When there is good sportsmanship among a group, gambling adds to the game. However, it should be absolutely barred among the pros. Professional gambling can ruin any sport, even golf.

Round 3 plays (4pts):

Charley Hoffman to beat Kevin Chappell -140 @ 5Dimes [also available @ Carib and Stan James]
Opposing a player who has yet to finish in the top-50 this year or in the top-50 in three previous attempts in this event. Hoffman shot a very impressive 69 around the South Course on Thursday - the 2nd best of the day on that course - and the difference between these two players should be emphasised on this course.

Matt Jones to beat Kevin Chappell -125 @ Bet365
Opposing Chappell with Jones who has shown much better form recently and can also count a top-5 finish in this event.

Lee Westwood to beat Keegan Bradley +105 @ 5Dimes [also available @ Carib]
Backing Westwood for the third day. Currently 22nd after the first two days, given the reasons outlined above I'm convinced that he will improve his position over the weekend and shouldn't be plus odds against Bradley.

Russell Knox to beat Brad Fritsch -140 @ 5Dimes [also available @ Carib]
Of the 82 players who have made the cut, only two have hit fewer greens in regulation than Fritsch this week. That points to difficulty in scoring over the weekend, so I'll back Knox to finish ahead of him, just as he has done in 12 of their last 13 common events.

Charley Hoffman to beat Victor Dubuisson -111 @ Bet365
Back to Hoffman who should be a much stronger favourite against the young Frenchman who is certainly a very promising player and won his maiden European Tour event in November, but it is rather a big step to then be able to contend in his first-ever PGA Tour event.
