Son is tossing around the idea of joining the military. I gave him info on what it was like in the AF, his step-dad (still active duty) gave him the scoop on the Army and I would like someone to explain about the Marines and answer any questions he may have.
I figure once he has the info he can then talk to the recruiters to hear what they have to say and then make an informed choice on what he wants to do.
If there is any chance of meeting up with him I would appreciate it. I am figuring maybe at the Brat Stop or someplace like that. As an added bonus....there will be beer and brats included.

I would never even dream about talking him out of it. I was in for 9 years and had a great time.
When he graduated from HS 2 years ago I talked to him about joining and he wanted nothing to do with it. I didnt harp on him about it and let it drop. He now brought it up to me so we will see where it goes.

Does it seem like being in the Military 'runs in the family'? Not just yours, I mean for most Military people it seems like they go a couple generations deep.

It's hard for me to believe you would encourage your kid to join the Military right now. I wish him the best!

I am not Marine

I am not Marine

But a former one:

If you want free college money go to the Air Force

If you want to a free reach around: go to the Navy

J/K

In all seriousness: The Marines is a great opportunity, the smallest and most proud of all services in my opinion. You can advance very fast, depending on your MOS. If he gets into something like ATC or Computers he could be a Sgt in 2 years and be a Gunny in 6.

We worked hard and played harder. You make friends for life and took a lot of pride in what we did. When you deploy, you usually have it the worst though. Our gear always sucked and nothing ever worked.

Boot Camp was tough but more of a mind phuck than anything else. The quicker he realizes that everything he does is for a purpose and not for being singled out, he will do well and actually enjoy it. Do everything with speed and intensity and the DI'S will actually leave you alone or let you be a leader and that could mean a meritorious promotion upon graduation.

Some units deploy a lot, some never go anywhere. I knew guys that never went overseas in 20 years. If he is young and single, he should try to get into MSG and eventually be a DI. That is how you get to be a SMAJ. (best way anyway).

Good luck to him, I can answer ?'s here, and have not been out for too terribly long.

I tried to hook up with Marine once already at the Brat Stop.

He wanted no part of it. Says he heard it was a place for Cheesehead purse carriers.

Maybe he just thought I was gonna mickey his drink to get the goods on his starfish and report back to the forum. ;)

You should let me try and talk him out of it. Nothing wrong with having him hear ALL arguments before a decision.

So True!

Our barracks sucked big time, 3 men to a room even for a few NCO's! In recent years it improved some with some new construction, 1 shared head with 1 man 'suites'. But nothing comes close to Air Force Chow. Navy Chow was good, especially on the Blue side.

I would probably recommend the Air Force to a young guy looking for an 'easy' career where you rarely get dirty and don't have that high of a physical fitness standard. I am sure each branch has its special benefits etc. The Air Force definitely had the best looking women. The joke for Women Marines was that WM stood for:

Walking Mattress--man the stories I could tell
Wookie Monster--true in a lot of cases
Wooly Mammoth: sad but true as well

bubbas,

I will be delighted to talk to your son about the opportunities available to him.

If we can do it this week that would be great, going to be pretty busy the week of the 14th and will not have any free time.

How about something around 9pm ish one night during the week? or is that too late for you?

I'll be able to address the USMC and USN aspects of the military to him.

Feel free to snag my email from jack, i'll respond asap.
Brat Stop is under 2 miles from my house, so we can do a lot of beers.

Agent, always glad to see you spewing filth.
Guess my christmas wish didn't come true.

You also asked me to go "camping" with you all alone.

Not exactly the way to make a guy feel comfortable. I often wonder if you and tpaine ended up making out in his car at the stop light that night.

Marine...Thanks, will get your e-mail from Jack. Anytime after 6 this Mon or Tues would be good.

Scott....In the AF you can do just about any job that is in the civilian world. Firefighter, police, HVAC, Construction..etc.

Fattymanboobs...Thanks for the offer of answering some questions. You have it correct that the AF always has it better. Was in Honduras for 90 days on a base that was Army and AF. Army guys were living in tents and we were in air condtioned dorms.

Yes, the AF is traditionaly the butt of many jokes in the military community.
Just look at their uniforms, looks just like a greyhound bus driver.

They are not necessarily prima donnas, they just have a different role in the big picture.

You want prima donnas... go talk to a navy pilot.
Aircraft carriers are not that huge in size because they have a lot of stuff to haul around, they are that big because they need to be able to hold the egos of all the pilots on board.

Are there Marine pilots? A good friend of mine joined the Marines in late 2004, and I was told last week that he's training to be a Marine pilot. I'd never heard of that, and had also been drinking a lot that night, so I didn't know if he was just messing with me, or if they actually exist.
