Borrowed from another site. Thought it was some interesting info for tonites players.

i dont usually write analysis but in an effort to help the board i will offer some informed insight regarding this matchup.

first let me say that my bias is toward marshall so take that into account. that said here goes:

1. this game is a bitter rivalry, two years ago some of you may remember one of miami's assistant coaches being arrested and marched off the field in handcuffs following a last second stan hill (current marshall qb) touchdown. this game is almost certainly for the mac east championship and a bowl berth even though it is the first conference game for marshall and the second for miami.

2. marshall was unsettled with its offensive line as late as the day before its season opener with troy. they were trying different combinations among 8-10 offensive linemen at the various o line positions. for example the now starting right guard was scheduled to start at center, guard, and tackle on various days the week before the opener w/ troy. the same is true with all 5 oline positions. as such the line did not have an opportunity to jell and hill was sacked 8 times in the opener with troy. the next week vs ohio state and since they have settled on a starting 5 o line and protection for hill as well as run blocking has been much better.

3 qb stan hill has had tendinidis in his elbow since early august but is finally almost completely healed. little known was the fact that he suffered 3 cracked ribs vs ohio state and so played most of that game and all of ga game in that condition with the 10 days off he is pretty much healthy for the first time this yr.

4.marshall has a fabulous true freshman running back ahmad bradshaw who missed ga and will miss tonight with a high ankle sprain, he is a true gamebreaker and will be missed for depth, however the starter earl charles is healthy after suffering a sprained knee early in the ga game (with bradshaw sidelined he was forced to play almost the entire game) he is a solid back who will play in the nfl.additionally tank tunstall wva hs player of the year 3 yrs ago 6'1 235 is finally available at running back after being sidelined to date with a pulled hamstring, he will be able to help out especially in short yardage, and be able to give charles an occasional breather along with the #tb.

5. marshall's defense is rock solid vs the run and pass as evidenced in the ohio state and ga games.

6. i have seen miami play once (vs mich) i belive marshall's defense will handle them tonight (14-17pts max)

7.. i was in huntington and attended all the august practices and have watched and listened closely to head coach pruett for about 6 yrs now and i think i have a decent read into his coach speak. this week what i have heard from him is that :
1. last week after the ga game he felt hill had missed several opportunities to make plays and has been quoted as having told hill that i"if he wants to be the man he has to play like the man or else they will find a new man" in other words step up or we will begin playing hot shot red shirt frosh bernard morris who pruett has compared to byron leftwich type arm ( a cannon) and speed *(4.5 4 0).
2. pruett has been uncomonly upbeat going into this game and has basically promised an offensive show.
3.hill and his ace w/r and a sure draft pick josh davis have spent the entire week together at hill's house "getting it together" (davis did not catch a pass at ga.- look for that to change big time tonight).
4. marshall will open up the offense tonight after being forced to the short passing game vs o st and ga for protection purposes.

below is a section from the chas. daily mail marshall beat writer. as i said above i attend many marshall preactices and this guy spends about half the practice at head coach pruetts side each day talking to him so although like mine his bias is to marshall he has a very good read into the program here is part of what he had to say in todays paper.

When Marshall hosts the archrival Miami RedHawks at 7 o'clock tonight at Edwards Stadium, I expect the national television audience watching on ESPN2 to see the Herd offense explode.

Not at first, mind you.

Marshall's offense will begin the game running the ball and utilize a short, ball-control passing game. There will be plenty of flare passes to running backs Earl Charles and Ahmad Bradshaw, quick tosses to the tight end and short passes to the wideouts.

Then, as the horizontal attack stretches Miami's defense and forces RedHawk linebackers to stay home, Marshall will start throwing downfield with Hill and star wide receiver Josh Davis taking over the game.

The result will be a lopsided Marshall win and an end to the offensive embarrassment.

i know this was rather long but i hope that it will offer some insight to those interested.

GOOD LUCK

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Thundering Herd football coach Bob Pruett addressed the media Tuesday in preparations for the Herd's first Mid-American Conference football game against the Miami RedHawks next Wednesday night.

Opening Comments

It really wouldn?t make a lot of difference if we were 0-3 or 3-0 going into this game, because this is the one (conference games) that gets us to the bowl game. If we can do what I hope to do (win the league), what we did in the first three ball games will make us a good attraction in a bowl. I think we?re basically starting over, regardless if we won one, two, or all three of the ball games.

If we?re 1-2, we beat Troy, we?d still be feeling bad. If we beat Ohio State, we would have been 2-0, and we would have come back from Georgia wondering what we should have and could have done. Could of?s and should of?s are out of the way, and now we?ll start worrying about what we can be.

Does the rivalry with Miami mean more to you than other MAC games?

I think that?s where the fans put it. But to be honest with you, we?ve had tough games with Akron, we?ve had tough games with Ohio?Ohio has beaten us as many times as Miami has. Bowling Green has beaten us. Every game has emphasis?I don?t think we can afford to emphasize any conference game over another. Yes, it?s a big ball game, but it?s the next one. I?m not downplaying it, but we have to step up and play every week in this league.

How important is this game to fans?

I think this means more to our long term fans because they ran the score up on us a few years ago.

This game usually decides the Division title?

In 1997 it didn?t, because we played it early. Usually it decides the division title because it?s late in the year.

Do you remember any particular games in this rivalry?

Not really. I think they?ve all been nice games, very competitive, high intensity games. If I remember one, it?s when we dedicated the bronze memorial on the stadium, and I remember that one because of the night. Certainly I thought it was a big ball game when we won when Byron was down in 2002. I thought our team rose to the occasion.

Is it still a little bit of a comfort that you?re 0-0 in conference play?

Not really. We?re still 0-3. It is a chance to rejuvenate our kids, but it does put an awful lot on one ball game, because everyone is saying it?s for the division title. I don?t think necessarily that it is, but it does go a long way.

What?s the difference between this year and in 2000?

I think by far we played tougher teams. I think the competition has been greater and we?ve been more competitive. Somehow we?ve got to start scoring some points.

How do you address the offense and the scoring issues?

Well, we haven?t practiced since the game Saturday. But, we just played against one of the better defensive teams I?ve seen in a long time. When their safeties are bigger than our linebackers, you get an idea of the size difference. But, hopefully we?ve learned the game because we?ve been stressed each week. Our guys now know and understand that we can play against the best in the country, and I hope they now know they can play against anybody.

It looks as if you?ve got guys on defense that are really playing well. Jonathan Goddard, Chris Royal, and Kevin Atkins are really making a lot of plays.

Well, I think our defensive football team as a whole is really doing well. We?re getting plays from our entire defense. Some of the guys in the coverage area are doing well, Curtis Keyes is doing a good job in run support, and all three of our linebackers are playing well, and our front is playing well. I think we?re playing pretty good as a defense, but I think there are some areas we could improve on. We could be defending the pass better?we?ve had people running free because of mental busts. Other than that, I think we can continue to get better defensively.

Talk about Ian O?Connor?s kicking game.

I?ve been really pleased with him. He really worked hard when we asked him to become a punter. He got better on his kickoffs, and got better on his field goals. He?s the most improved player from his freshman year to his sophomore year than I?ve ever seen.

What areas does Miami seem to be better than they were last year?

They have outstanding receivers and a really good quarterback. They have most of their offensive line back, and they do a good job of protecting the quarterback.

Do you think that since Marshall is leaving the MAC, all of the other teams are going to give their best shot at the Herd?

They did when we weren?t leaving, so that?s nothing new. We expect that. But, you know what? They are going to get our best shot too.

Is last year?s game going to come up this week?

Not really. They thumped us pretty good last year. You just tip your hat and give them credit. This is a different team.

Would you like to see Stan have a breakout game? He?s played against three great defenses.

I think Miami is a good defensive football team. I think they are a good football team. He just needs to go out there and make plays. He?s capable of doing it, and I believe he will do it.

Miami University Head Football Coach Terry Hoeppner
Press Conference Comments September 24, 2004

On the Challenges of Playing a Mid-Week Game:

"I know it's Friday, but it's Monday in our world. Our plan is to do things the same as we did for our weekday games last year. It's really the perfect amount of time off for right now in the season. We gave the guys a couple of days off earlier this week to catch up on the books, get an extra lift in and heal some of the bumps and bruises that are common at this point. We had a bonus practice last night, we have another tonight and tomorrow we start off like it's the Tuesday before a Saturday game."

On the Ohio Game:

"It's a big win whenever you beat Ohio University. It's always a spirited game, and I'm glad we got to play them early. They're going to surprise some people before the season's over. We sacked them five times and shut them out in the first half, but they kept making adjustments and were moving the ball in the second half. I didn't like how we finished the game defensively."

"I was questioned after the game about passing on fourth-and-10 from their 25-yard line. We didn't want to risk having a field goal blocked and giving them the opportunity to score. We could have run the ball and taken a few seconds off the clock, but it was a close game and it doesn't take much time for a lot to happen in college football. Josh wanted to throw the fade, which we felt would be very hard for them to turn into a big play, and he executed well and got rid of the ball quickly."

On the Upcoming Game With Marshall:

"We get to go down to Huntington next week and play playoff game number two in the conference. I expect that it will be a playoff-type atmosphere there. I think they're probably the best 0-3 team in the nation. They've played against three very good teams with great defenses, but their defense has also been very good."

"We're going to go down there with great determination. The players know it's a must-win if we're going to control our own destiny. That sounds tough, but these are tough kids and they understand that. For anyone in college football arguing about a playoff, tune in on Wednesday night and you'll see a playoff game."

"Sometimes when you come across the line of scrimmage for the first time, things don't happen the way you expect them to. We watch a lot of tape and try figure out how a team is going to react against different formations, but you don't know for sure how your team is going to match up until that first series. Outside of the quarterbacks, there are a lot of the same guys playing in this game that were here a year ago. How they match up as well as the emotion and focus they bring to the game are important factors in how the game will play out."

On the Game Being Player Earlier this Season:

"I'll guarantee you none of the players are asking why this game is being played early in the season. It doesn't matter. We're going down to Huntington Wednesday, and they're the next team we have to check off our list. We play well on the road, and we're going to go into that game with a lot of confidence."

On Marshall's Offensive Line:

"Marshall's offensive line has done a lot better job of protecting the passer since their first game. Their offense isn't as explosive as it has been, but that has a lot to do with the level of competition they've faced. They've got some big guys on the line who are going to make it hard for us to use our speed on defense."
