This year, all the drivers will like pit road better. The old one, long and narrow, made for some dicey maneuvering heading into and out of the pits, but 10 additional feet make it less likely to be an issue.

"Ten feet might not sound like much, but it's a hundred miles to these race cars," Sterling Marlin said during a test session at the track.

John Andretti can't really explain it. He knows he likes going to NASCAR's short track in Martinsville. He runs well there but that's because he likes it, not why he does. Explaining his attraction to the place some drivers fear and others simply dislike is difficult.Andretti has watched strong runs end at the hands of overly aggressive drivers. Still, he likes coming to what is viewed as a home track for Petty Enterprises, which is located about 70 miles from the track in Randleman, N.C.

"You've got to get the car to do a lot of different things, but it really doesn't do anything particularly right," Andretti said. "You've got to worry about the brakes, keeping the nose on the car, running into people. With all those things, it's pretty tough at Martinsville because it's pretty close quarters for 43 cars
