Maryland starting quarterback C.J. Brown suffered a torn ACL and will be out for the season. He suffered the injury Tuesday night in a non-contact drill, the school announced on Wednesday.
?I feel terrible for C.J.,? coach Randy Edsall said in the release. ?He's worked incredibly hard to be the starting quarterback of this team. He's stepped up and been a tremendous leader. We'll do everything we can to make sure he gets the best treatment to help in his recovery.?
Brown started five games for Maryland last year. He threw for 842 yards with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. Brown was the team's second-leading rusher with 574 yards and five rushing touchdowns.
?Although C.J. won't be out on the field, he'll continue to be an important part of this program,? Edsall said. ?As a captain and team leader he'll do everything he can to help mentor the other quarterbacks on our team.?
Maryland will turn to true freshmen Perry Hills and Caleb Rowe. Edsall said last night in the team's practice report that Hills is ahead of Rowe.
?Right now Perry is the No. 2 guy,? Edsall said. ?He's a little bit ahead of Caleb right now? there is still really good competition right now but Perry is a little ahead. [Perry's] overall command and presence on the field in terms of running everything and not making as many mental mistakes put him ahead.?
