Mason Foster expected to start at inside linebacker against Cowboys

The Washington Redskins will experience another lineup change at inside linebacker: Because of a foot injury that will sideline Perry Riley Jr. for three to six weeks, Mason Foster is expected receive his first start this season Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

While Foster hasn?t been relied upon in a starting role before with the Redskins, the fifth-year linebacker wasn?t always a backup, starting 54 of 57 games over four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Foster had five career interceptions, two defensive touchdowns and 12 passes defended during that stretch.

?I?ve been prepared for this because I knew being around a little bit, playing a couple of years, I know how quickly something can happen and you?re the next guy up,? Foster said. ?People outside, people upstairs and the coaches don?t want to see no let-off. Don?t flinch, like coach [Joe Barry] says, so keep pushing forward and keep going.?

Foster was one of the final cuts by the Chicago Bears before the season began. He didn?t sign with the Redskins until Week 4, when the team was lacking depth at the position. With injuries to Riley and Keenan Robinson, who will be questionable with a shoulder injury, it looks as if Foster will finally receive another opportunity to prove his worth in the NFL.

?He?s prepared and he?s ready to go,? Redskins Coach Jay Gruden said. ?He?s a good linebacker.?

Foster is one of a number of backups whom the Redskins have had to rely upon this season because of injuries, particularly in the secondary. Through it all, Foster said, the coaching staff has done a solid job of preparing the backups each week.

?Even when I was only getting a couple of reps preparing throughout the week to play certain positions, I was still competing at a high level on the scout team going against [Jordan] Reed, going against Matt Jones and everybody,? Foster said. ?So you?re ready to play.?

Key matchups to watch Monday night

The 5-6 Redskins aim to bolster their standing atop the NFC East while the 3-8 Cowboys will try to get on track in what has represented a tumultuous season.

Four-point favorites to win the game, Washington seeks back-to-back victories for the first time this season, and also will try to improve to 6-1 at home.

Here are some of key matchups to follow in this game:

Washington LT Trent Williams vs. Dallas DE Greg Hardy
This game will likely be won in the trenches, and this matchup between Pro Bowl players represents one of the most crucial. Hardy leads the Cowboys with 4.5 sacks, but Williams is having another fine season and looks to do his part as he and his fellow linemen aim to avoid surrendering a sack for a second straight week. If the Redskins can keep Kirk Cousins clean in the pocket and set him up for another effective, turnover-free day, Washington should have a big day against a Dallas defense that surrenders 23.7 points per game.

Washington DE Chris Baker vs. Dallas RG Zack Martin
The Redskins? defensive front will try to capitalize on the opportunity to play against the struggling Matt Cassel instead of Tony Romo. In five games, Cassel has thrown five touchdown passes, five interceptions and has been sacked 10 times. Baker, who has served as Washington?s most disruptive defensive lineman with five sacks and 44 tackles, draws a tough assignment as he goes up against the talented Zack Martin. The Cowboys will try to ease pressure on Cassel by running the ball often. Washington?s defensive front must avoid letting running back Darren McFadden, who has managed just 3.8 yards per carry this season, rediscover his effectiveness and have a big day.

Washington RB Alfred Morris vs. Dallas SS Barry Church
Given the chance last week to shoulder the load after weeks of splitting carries with Matt Jones, Alfred Morris paced Washington?s rushing attack against the Giants. Morris was especially instrumental late in the game with some key runs that helped Washington continue to run time off the clock. The Redskins hope last week?s outing represents a resurgence of their rushing attack. Church this season boasts 81 tackles for a Dallas defense that limits opponents to 106 rushing yards per game.

Washington ILB Will Compton vs. Dallas TE Jason Witten

With Perry Riley out with foot surgery, and Keenan Robinson still not at full strength, more pressure falls on the shoulders of Compton, who has played well since moving into the starting lineup three games ago. But in addition to having to serve as one of the leading run-stoppers, Compton must also play well in pass coverage this week as he faces future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten, who leads the Cowboys with 55 catches for 508 yards, two touchdowns and 24 first downs.

Washington WR DeSean Jackson vs. Dallas CB Byron Jones
Jackson finally seems to have found his groove again. In the last two weeks, he has scored on touchdown receptions of 50 yards or longer. His presence forces defense to play Washington differently. Safeties can?t play as close to the line out of fear that Jackson will burn their cornerbacks. Jones, who leads the Cowboys with eight pass breakups, will have his hands full with the speedy Jackson. Look for Kirk Cousins to try to pick on the rookie with several deep shots to Jackson. It?s also important for Jackson to have an impact in the intermediate passing game to take advantage of the extra cushion the defensive backs will likely give him.

Washington CB Bashaud Breeland vs. Dallas WR Dez Bryant
Breeland had his coming out party last year when matched up with Bryant. Breeland had six tackles and four pass breakups, including one to clinch the game in overtime. The second-year pro says he feels like a far better player this season, and a week after turning in a quality performance during his matchups with Odell Beckham Jr., he welcomes the challenge of neutralizing Bryant yet again. Bryant has had a trying season, missing five games with injury, and also struggling to have the same impact without Romo. He and Cassel still are working to get their timing down, but Breeland will try to make sure that doesn?t happen this week. Asked about this game, Breeland admitted he relishes another chance to further prove himself. But then he tried to downplay it a bit, saying ?But I look forward to every opportunity I get. I respect them all, fear none.?
