Massa will live, but eye damage worrying
July 27, 2009

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -A doctor says Felipe Massa's life is no longer in danger, but that the Ferrari driver sustained an eye injury in his crash which could affect his future in Formula One.

Robert Veres, the doctor who performed surgery on Massa after his crash, said Monday that Massa was stable and remained sedated ``to protect his brain.''

Veres said Massa had suffered damage to his left eye but didn't ``know the quality of this damage.''

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo said that Ferrari's first priority was Massa's health but that the Italian team doesn't ``want to wait too long'' to decide on finding a driving replacement.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -Felipe Massa's health was improving Monday after the Formula One driver communicated passively with doctors, and medical scans provided encouraging signs after surgery on multiple skull fractures.

Department of defense ministry spokesman Istvan Bocskai told the Associated Press that Massa was not speaking but that the 28-year-old Brazilian reacted when spoken to and was moving his hands and feet.

Massa was in life-threatening but stable condition following surgery on multiple skull injuries sustained during a violent crash in his Ferrari Saturday at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Bocskai said that military hospital doctors were reassured after no complications were uncovered by a CT scan. An ultrasound performed Sunday night to check on internal injuries revealed ``nothing that would give cause for concern.''

The sedated Massa was also being woken up more frequently.

``These are definitely positive signs,'' Bocskai said.

Massa received a concussion after a loose car part hit his helmet during a qualifying run on Saturday.

He then slammed into a protective tire barrier at about 120 mph causing multiple skull injuries that were operated on around one hour after being taken from the Hungaroring circuit.

Although Massa was in stable condition in the intensive care unit at AEK hospital following surgery, doctors called Massa's condition as life-threatening due to the severity of the injuries.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo was scheduled to join the 11-time Grand Prix winner's family - which includes pregnant wife Anna Rafaela - on Monday.

F1's governing body is investigating the crash.

FIA suspends Renault from next F1 race

FIA suspends Renault from next F1 race

FIA suspends Renault from next F1 race
July 26, 2009

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -Renault has been suspended from the upcoming European Grand Prix after the latest in a string of safety mishaps to hit Formula One.

Renault was disciplined after Fernando Alonso's right front wheel came off his car and bounced wildly down the track as the pole-sitter rounded turn No. 9 during the 13th lap of Sunday's Hungarian GP.

The incident came one day after safety was called into question when Felipe Massa of Ferrari was struck in the helmet by a stray part from another car and he slammed into a protective tire barrier at high speed during qualifying.

The Brazilian had surgery on multiple skull fractures and remained hospitalized in ``life-threatening'' but stable condition.

``We have phenomenal safety in Formula One, and yesterday was just incredibly freakish that that type of material could have been bouncing around and then bouncing at head height and then Felipe was coming, so very freakish that it should happen,'' Red Bull driver Mark Webber said. ``The FIA did a good job at the scene. We don't want to get too carried away with it.''

Governing body FIA said it would review Massa's crash since it was normal procedure, while several drivers and team principals called for safety measures to be re-examined.

Massa's accident happened six days after F2 driver Henry Surtees, son of former F1 champion John Surtees, died in a crash caused by a loose tire at Brands Hatch.

In Sunday's incident, FIA said Renault had been ``suspended from the next event in the Formula One'' championship for failing to advise the two-time world champion that a wheel nut was not properly secured.

FIA made the decision after reviewing film and radio recordings of the race, which was won by Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.

Renault formally appealed the penalty on Sunday. It now has 48 hours to lodge the appeal and eight days to present the grounds of appeal.

FIA said that that Renault released Alonso knowing the wheel nut was vulnerable and ``being aware of this failed to take any action to prevent the car from leaving the pit-lane. (Renault) failed to inform the driver of this problem or advise him to take appropriate action given the circumstances.''

FIA said that radio transmissions demonstrated that Alonso had contacted the team relaying concern that he had a ``tire puncture.''

``When I left the pits there was a lot of vibration and it felt like I had a puncture, but then a few corners later the wheel flew off my car,'' Alonso said after the race. ``Today, we missed an opportunity to finish on the podium.''

Though no F1 driver has died on track since former champion Ayrton Senna crashed at Imola 15 years ago, drivers are well aware of the ever-present dangers.

``As long as we race with open cockpits, our heads are always in the worst place and the first place that's going to be hit if there's something flying around,'' said Kimi Raikkonen, Massa's teammate. ``This is a part of racing and we all know that. It's just a sad thing to happen.''

Formula One driver Massa takes first steps since Budapest crash

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Formula One driver Felipe Massa took his first steps Wednesday since a high-speed crash in Budapest, Hungary, last weekend left him near death.

Massa's father said his improving son had moved out of AEK hospital's intensive care unit.

"Felipe speaks, can sit upright and was even able to take his first steps," Ferrari said in a statement. "From the clinical and radiological point of view, everything is going extremely well."

The 28-year-old Brazilian was hit in the helmet by a loose part from another car and crashed into a protective tire barrier at 120 mph during qualifying Saturday at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He sustained skull fractures and a concussion.

Massa's father, Luiz Antonio, said his son still doesn't remember the accident.

He expected Massa to be transferred to a hospital in Paris as soon as Thursday, but doctors told him his son was likely to remain in Budapest until Sunday.

In a related note, seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher will make a comeback for Ferrari to replace Massa.

Ferrari said in a statement that the German had agreed to get back into the cockpit until Massa is fit to return. The next race is the European Grand Prix from Aug. 21 to 23 in Valencia, Spain.

? MAYFIELD SUIT -- Jeremy Mayfield's stepmother sued the suspended NASCAR driver in Statesville, N.C., claiming he made slanderous, false and defamatory statements.

In civil court papers filed in civil court, Lisa Mayfield argues that her stepson falsely accused her of killing his father and taking money from NASCAR. She's seeking compensatory and punitive damages of more than $10,000 each and "further relief as the Court may deem just and proper."

Jeremy Mayfield's comments in several interviews came after his stepmother signed an affidavit claiming she witnessed him taking methamphetamine at least 30 times in seven years. Her affidavit was part of a NASCAR filing asking the federal judge who lifted the driver's drug suspension to reinstate the ban.

The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has since ruled in NASCAR's favor to keep Mayfield off the track.

The driver has denied ever using the illegal drug.
