Gramm: We need more leadership, less whining

Gramm told Washington Times, "We have sort of become a nation of whiners"

(CNN) -- Phil Gramm, a top adviser to Sen. John McCain, on Thursday stood by his comment that the country is in a "mental recession," and said he was trying to say the nation's leaders, not its people, were "whiners."

Phil Gramm, left, is an economic adviser for Sen. John McCain.

Democrats blasted Gramm, who advises presumed Republican nominee McCain on economic matters, for saying Americans who have named the economy as a top concern this campaign cycle were "a nation of whiners."

The comments came in a Washington Times interview published Thursday.

"We have sort of become a nation of whiners. You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline," said the former Texas senator. "You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession."

Gramm also said the media was responsible for fostering unnecessary anxiety over the state of the economy. "Misery sells newspapers," he said. "Thank God the economy is not as bad as you read in the newspaper every day."

Gramm called CNN to clarify his remarks before boarding a flight Thursday.

He said was not speaking for the campaign when he made the remarks.

"I didn't claim to be representing anyone except myself," he said.

Gramm said he was not trying to insult the country's people.

"The whiners are the leaders. Hell, the American people are victims, but it didn't quite come out that way in the story," Gramm said.

These national and congressional leaders "blame speculators and oil companies for our problems, instead of presenting concrete programs for using energy more efficiently, or leaders who don't think we can compete with Mexico."

"What we need is more leadership and less whining," he added.

But he stood by his assessment that the country was in a "mental recession."

"I said we are in a mental recession. We keep getting the steady drumbeat of bad news ... it's become a mental recession," said Gramm. "We don't have measured negative growth. That's a fact, that's not a commentary."

Asked whether he understood beforehand the kind of political impact his statements might have, he said the outraged reactions his remarks had drawn were just part of the "game." Anytime anyone says something, said Gramm, it can be "taken out of context."

McCain forcefully repudiated the remarks while campaigning in Michigan, which has the highest unemployment rate in the nation.

"I don't agree with Sen. Gramm," McCain said. "I believe that the person here in Michigan that just lost his job isn't suffering a mental recession. I believe the mother here in Michigan and around America who is trying to get enough money to educate their children isn't whining." Watch McCain back away from Gramm comments ?

"Phil Gramm does not speak for me," he said. "I speak for me."

Asked if there was any chance Gramm would be treasury secretary or handle economic policy under a McCain administration, McCain quickly turned to humor.

"I think Sen. Gramm would be in serious consideration for ambassador to Belarus, although I'm not sure the citizens of Minsk would welcome that," he said.

Gramm's comments were seized upon by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, who criticized McCain and Gramm earlier in the day in Virginia, saying: "America already has one Dr. Phil. We don't need another one when it comes to the economy." Watch Obama say one Dr. Phil is enough ?

Obama said his administration would deliver more than "psychological" relief.

The Democratic National Committee accused McCain of not understanding voters' economic struggles.

"Sen. McCain said the economic problems facing Americans are psychological -- now his top economic adviser and BFF, Phil Gramm said Americans facing tough economic are 'whiners,' " said Democratic National Committee spokesman Brad Woodhouse in a statement sent to reporters.

Democrats have been looking to portray McCain as out of touch on the economy, as he and Obama battle over working-class voters, who have named the economy as their biggest worry this year.

McCain's campaign earlier moved to distance itself from Gramm's comments.

"Phil Gramm's comments are not representative of John McCain's views. John McCain travels the country every day talking to Americans who are hurting, feeling pain at the pump and worrying about how they'll pay their mortgage," a McCain official said.

"That's why he has a realistic plan to deliver immediate relief at the gas pump, grow our economy and put Americans back to work

McCain misfires on Obama attack
Posted: 08:30 PM ET

From CNN's Evan Glass, CNN's Kerith McFadden

McCain criticized Obama for missing a Senate vote he also missed.
(CNN) ? It turns out that John McCain made an off-the-mark error when he launched at Barack Obama this week over Iran?s missile tests.

In a statement criticizing Obama?s positions on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, the organization claiming credit for the missile launches, McCain wrote, ?This is the same organization that I voted to condemn as a terrorist organization when an amendment was on the floor of the United States Senate. Senator Obama refused to vote.?

The problem with the critique? McCain also missed that vote on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment on September 26, 2007. Records show that Obama was in New Hampshire and McCain was in New York instead of being in the Senate chamber for the vote in question.

The McCain campaign admits the error but points to their candidate?s tough stance against the country President Bush once grouped into the ?axis of evil.?

?Its time to make the Iranians understand that this kind of violation of international treaties, this kind of threat, threatening of their neighbors, continued military activity is not without cost,? McCain said on Wednesday.

Despite Obama?s voting absence, his campaign is touting legislation he sponsored in March 2007 (S. 970) which also would have designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization. Obama?s legislation never had a vote in the Senate.

there is a big differance in flip flopping at times or just being out and out stupid like McCain.

The guy scares me

In four years he will be 76 .

The way that job ages people , McCain will be
a basket case if he is not already.

He just cannot stop himself from saying stupid
stuff.

We are a nation of whiners. Its not a bad thing if you are complaining about legitimate issues and not becoming part of the problem.Too bad you get in trouble if you tell the truth in politics We elect these dumb masses to city, state and federal positions and expect them to solve our problems. Instead they create more and we keep sending 'em back. I think we can all find numerous examples of Republicans and Democrats screwing up this country every single fawking day.

Whine, bitch and moan. Hell yeah.

New McCain ad: Hispanic immigrants are 'God's children'
Posted: 08:45 AM ET

From CNN Associate Political Editor Rebecca Sinderbrand

A new McCain ad is aimed at Hispanic voters in key battleground states.
(CNN) ? John McCain is airing a new ad ? in which he calls Hispanic Americans ?God?s Children? ? in his latest bid to win over that key voting bloc.

The spot comes amid a major push on that front by the presumptive Republican nominee, including private meetings with community leaders, Spanish-language radio ads, the launch of regular campaign conference calls with Hispanic pastors, and speeches at high-profile gatherings like this week?s address at the League of Latin American Citizens and next Monday?s speech at National Council La Raza ? two of the trifecta of major Latino conferences McCain will make an appearance at this cycle.

The new ad ? which will air in Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico, all neighbors of McCain?s home state of Arizona which are all heavily-contested states this cycle ? features comments from a summer 2007 debate in which the senator praises the service of Hispanic veterans.

?My friends, I want you the next time you're down in Washington, D.C., to go to the Vietnam War Memorial and look at the names engraved in black granite. You'll find a whole lot of Hispanic names,? McCain said in remarks included in the 30-second spot.

He praised the service of members of the military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, including ?some of the few thousand that are still green card holders who are not even citizens of this country, who love this country so much that they're willing to risk their lives in its service in order to accelerate their path to citizenship and enjoy the bountiful, blessed nation.?
