Get Ready ... McNabb On SI Cover
January 13, 2004
By DAVE SPADARO

Quarterback Donovan McNabb is pictured on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated, only the seventh time in the magazine's history and the first time since 1992 that an Eagle has graced the cover.

McNabb is pictured running with the ball during Sunday's 20-17 overtime win against Green Bay. Sports Illustrated staff writer Michael Silver was at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday covering McNabb and the game.

The magazine hits newsstands on Wednesday.

Here is a brief history of Eagles appearances on the cover of SI:

Eagles quarterback Norm Van Brocklin was pictured on the cover in the Dec. 19, 1960 edition taking the ball from center and appearing ready to hand off. The Eagles won the NFL Championship that season.

Eagles wide receiver Tommy McDonald is pictured, in a drawing, on the cover of the Oct. 8, 1962 edition with the caption, "Football's Best Hands" next to the picture.

This was an unusual one: tight end Vyto Kab was pictured on the Dec. 6, 1982 cover being tackled by a Redskins defender during a game. The headline read, THE UNDEFEATED, followed by "The Surprising Redskins Put The Clamps On Philly."

The Sept. 11, 1989 NFL preview edition featured the famous Randall Cunningham ULTIMATE WEAPON cover with the tag line: "Philadelphia's Randall Cunningham: The Quarterback For The '90s.

On Dec. 2, 1991, a close shot of quarterback Jim McMahon graces the cover, reading MASKED MARVEL. "Battered and bruised Jim McMahon rallies the Eagles into playoff contention."

Finally, Cunningham is pictured again in action during a Monday night blowout win over Dallas on the Oct. 12, 1992 Sports Illustrated Cover. It reads MONDAY NIGHT MADNESS. "Randall Cunningham and the Eagles smash the Cowboys."
Now it's McNabb's turn on the cover. He had already been featured on the cover of The Sporting News earlier this season.
