Im sensitive to this because it damn near happened to me once..
Fresh out of college excited about my new job in Dallas.. I sometimes had to drop off medical equipment to patients homes.. A few weeks before my incident I was pulled over by a cop near a less than reputable neighborhood.. He was pissed. He said if im down here in this area im either lost or looking for drugs.. Either way turn around and get out of here!
As a young ignorant kid at the time the policeman's attitude offended me. I had real hippy mentality that if you dont bother people, people wont bother you.... Nobody cares about skin tone anymore lets all live in harmony! Sunshine and rainbows!...Only my stuffy conservative dad and Rush Limbaugh would think otherwise.. Makes sense right??
A few weeks later I had a delivery in the same area.. With confidence in my fellow man I drove right in. Pulled up to my patients house and rang the bell.. A kid answered.. "YEAH???" I was a bit taken back by his attitude.. " Yes im looking for Mr. So and So." His response. " Dad! Some white boys here!"
Uuuummmm???? Ok? I started to get a bit nervous.
Got the patient all set up on his bone stim device and when I came out the front door about 10-12 people were waiting for me..
OH SHIT.. I put my head down and made a B line for my car but was pushed down from behind. People were yelling at me and I think I was kicked a few times.. Not sure my heart was beating so fast I didnt feel much. "Wrong neighborhood white boy" All i remember hearing.
Thank god the guy I was there to help came out with a bat (I think) and got them off me. People were still throwing bottles at my car as I sped down the street.
I remember it was a tuesday morning at 11am. I drove away heart thumping like a jackhammer. I Went home a bit wiser that day..
