Kenny Rogers shakes off early homer to lead Tigers over Mets 9-5

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) - Kenny Rogers gave up a two-run homer to Carlos Beltran in the first inning, then settled down and pitched the Detroit Tigers past the New York Mets 9-5 on Friday.

Rogers, who led Detroit to the World Series last year, allowed five hits in four innings, while striking out two. The 42-year-old left-hander was happy with his two-seam fastball and said his four-seamer got better as the day went on.

"Ninety per cent of the time I got it reasonably close to where I wanted to," Rogers said. "My four-seamer started off, the one to Beltran was a poorly located one. I thought it was so high up that he wouldn't catch it, but bad pitches deserve to get hit out."

Beltran's home run might have hurt the Tigers more than it did Rogers. On the play, left-fielder Craig Monroe tried to make a leaping catch but felt a twinge on the way up. He was replaced by Ryan Raburn.

Afterward, Monroe had a bandage on his left knee to reduce the swelling. He was checked by team doctors and said he would have a better idea about the extent of the injury Saturday, though he did not think it was serious.

"It's not hurting now," Monroe said.

Mets starter John Maine threw three shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk, while striking out three.

Last season, Rogers was a key to Detroit's turnaround. He went 17-8 with a 3.84 ERA and pitched 23 consecutive scoreless innings in the post-season.

He said his command was better than in his last outing, when he allowed two runs in two innings against Cleveland.

"I was putting the ball where I wanted to," Rogers said. "That's pretty much all I want to do is locate my fastball, and I'm trying to do that right now. I was pretty happy with where I was."

"There's no doubt it was a building block."

The Tigers got home runs from Mike Hessman and Ramon Santiago.

Notes: Mets 1B Carlos Delgado missed his fourth straight game with a sore neck. X-rays were negative. ... Backup 1B Julio Franco had an MRI and X-rays on his left hand and could be out a few days with tendon inflammation. "It's really sore," he said. "I'm glad it happened now as opposed to during the season." ... New York pitcher Philip Humber struggled through two innings. He gave up a three-run shot to Hessman. ... Mets OF Lastings Milledge came to camp with a shaved head.
