"the bunker"
TV5) — ""Around 1:00am August 11th three men purchased cell phones from the Wal-Mart store on M-81 near the corner of M-24 in Caro. Wal-Mart places a limit on the number of cell phones that can be purchased at once, that number is three. The three men allegedly bought 80 by purchasing them three at time so that an alert wouldn’t be triggered by the cash register. They also paid cash.

An alert clerk grew suspicious and called Tuscola County central dispatch. The Caro Police Department sent a unit and stopped the rented van on M-81 just east of Caro. The suspects were headed towards Bad Axe on M-81 where there is another Super Wal-Mart.

The three men were described as being of Pakistani descent but live in Texas. Police say the three, ages 19, 22, and 23 appear to be naturalized citizens. One man was driving while the other two were in the back opening the phone packages with box cutters throwing the phones in one box, batteries in another and the packaging and phone charger in another container. The suspects had 1000 other cell phones in the van. There was also a bag of receipts showing that someone was in Wisconsin the day before.

The phones were Nokia Tracfones selling for $20 at Wal-Mart. For your twenty dollars you receive a phone charger and 40 minutes of airtime. The phones do not have to be registered with a name. Also discovered was a laptop with store addresses and store logos.""

hmmmm...what's the problem?...doesn't everybody here each own 333 untraceable cell phones?....one for every day of the year..

i`ve been using `em for quite awhile...but,i never knew I could blow stuff up with it...

What did they do, buy 3, leave, come back in, buy 3 more, leave, come back in, buy 3 more, etc?!? I think we will have to require Wal-Mart to stop hiring senior citizens to be greeters. After about the 5th "Hi, Muhammed/Mohammed, Welcome to Wal-Mart!", I think we have a problem.

Apparently the walmart workers were smarter than you gave them credit for. Besides, the senior citizens might be the best ones to pick this stuff up. Most of them are as racist as they come because of their upbringing.

According to a CNN article:

"Officers were dispatched early Friday when the men aroused suspicion at a Caro Wal-Mart, where they purchased 80 prepaid wireless "TracFones" with cash, Caro Police Chief Ben Page said."

Well, yes, I would hope they were smarter than the humorous picture I tried to paint. It was more in fun than being serious. It just didn't sound like they would be able to buy a cartload of pre-paid wireless cell phones with cash and not be questioned...so I posed the other option, which seemed a little funny in my head.

I would assume that there have to be some kind of checks and balances on some items for a major retailer - like cellphones, perhaps - if for nothing else concerns about resale, that kind of thing. I suppose there are companies that might purchase a large group of pre-paid cellphones for employees for some good reasons, it would make sense. But in this day and age...a couple of people who look arab come in to purchase a cartload of cell phones? It simply has to be ok to at least check out why they want them, to question them. Hell, I'd question a couple of Biff-looking guys in country club sweaters if they wheeled up a cartload of untraceable pre-paid cell phones.

We have to be reasonable about all of this stuff, no matter what side of the aisle we lean. In 2006, the purchase of a cartload of cellphones should send up a red flag.

chadman...i totally agree but its kind of startling that they just can detain them under the auspices of terrorism rather than have any direct evidence..at least none that I have heard of to this point..that word has a huge stigma attached these days and should be used carefully..but i understand what your saying..

Hey were safer. It only took two weeks to find 11 missing students from Egypt. Thank god they were not the bombers. They were found in six cities. Man just think the damage they could have done.

Reliable sources have informed me TracPhones have replaced Sudafed as a key active ingredient in methamphetamine production in rural communities.

Local sheriffs are having a hard time getting a handle on this problem. Their resources have been stretched to the limit and are asking local merchants to cooperate in the monitoring of TracPhone sales.

Doctors in area ER's have reported neary 80% of all brain tumors they have encountered in recent months are related to TracPhone-laced meth.

I just saw that - not so much the phones but the batteries inside can produce something that helps the meth process (or something like that). Here is a new linked story that says they are having a hard time proving a terror link. Options we have discussed could be part of it, my point about possibly reselling at a profit was their excuse (shoot, now I am helping the terrorists again...), and now this batteries to meth possible use. Here is the story:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/08/14/national/main1890470.shtml

Of course it's on CBS news, so both myself AND the liberal media are helping the terrorists along here.

Just found it interesting. Seems like we should just recall all the darn cell phones as they are nothing but trouble most of the time...

No No, you are way off. Cell phone batteries are dangerous, and can explode at any time. Not safe for meth usage. It's the phones. Maybe the SIM cards.

On a serious note, I saw the reports today, and seemed like the lack of any evidence was a pretty obvious slam dunk that they have to be released.

You are probably right, IF, just commenting on what I read in the story, and I had heard something about it on talk radio this week.

From the story: Officials have said various illegal acts can be committed with prepaid cell phones, including using them as detonators, communicating among terrorists and using the batteries to makemethamphetamine.

I confess I have never made methamphetamine, but I hear business is good these days. Can't imagine I would want to ingest anything related to the insides of a battery, if there is any truth in that. Doesn't sound right to me, either.
