NEWS AND NOTES - In the Wednesday Night game Louisville had a 41:26-18:34 TOP and 31-14 FD and 577-343 yd edges. K-State got 3 key plays to make it appear respectable. PR Murphy was pinned in at his own 14 yd line but broke through and raced 86 yds for a TD. Trailing 35-14 K-St got 52 & 59 yd TD passes late in the 4Q...Buffalo?s Ernest Jackson had 3 TD?s vs Missouri including a 96 yd KR for a TD in the 1H. Missouri fumbled twice in UB territory and despite a 285-118 yd edge, only led 20-14 at the half. UB?s final drive started with 4:48 left and gained 61 yds in 16 plays to the MO 4 where they were int?d in the EZ as the Bulls only lost by 21...It was a week too late for us but Miss St was pummelled 38-7. Unlike 2 wks ago where they were outgained almost 3-1 by Auburn but only lost by 1, in the 1H they were only outgained 189-173 but trailed 21-0 as a fumble set up a GT TD and MSU was SOD at the GT 45 and had a FD at the 11 but was int?d at the 1 with :19 left in the half. A 4-0 TO edge helped GT as they totalled an amazing 438 yds rushing, their most since 1978. GT accomplished this despite losing QB Josh Nesbitt on the first series (hamstring) and Jaybo Shaw completed 3 of 7 for 43 yds and rushed for 61 in his place...Terrelle Pryor got his first start at QB for Ohio St and threw 4 TD passes. A surprising stat was that at half Troy had a 170-163 yd edge with the key play being a 45 yd TD pass with 1:49 left in the half that pulled them within 14-10. In the 3Q Troy was int?d at the 6 and the Buckeyes got breathing room with a 39 yd TD pass early 4Q. Pryor was the first frosh to start at QB for OSU since 1978...E Carolina led NC State 21-17 and went on a 64/11pl drive but was SOD at the 1. Their next drive went 8pl and had a 1st & gl at the 9 but they settled for a 21 yd FG and only led 24-17 with 4:27 left. NCSt went 55/7pl for a TD with 1:12 left to force OT and then forced a fumble in the 1st OT and got a TD to knock EC out of the mix of BCS busters...Texas A&M suffered their worst non-conf loss at Kyle Field since 1988 and for the first time in their history lost consecutive non-conf home games in the same season. After having just 140 yds LW vs Florida, Miami, FL had 261 in the 1H and avg an outstanding 6.98 ypp. At the half they only had a 261-225 yd edge but got a 26 yd TD pass with :26 left in the half to extend the lead to 24-10 and then a pair of TO?s set up 2 quick TD?s in the 3Q to blow it open to a 41-10 lead...TCU is the MWC?s ?other? powerhouse. Everyone is talking about BYU and Utah but the Frogs quietly have been dominating their games. They have not trailed a single second all season and LW obliterated SMU 48-7 with a 498-210 yd edge. Backup QB Jackson came in with 5:25 left 3Q and finished as their leading rusher with 115 yds thanks in part to a 79 yd TD run with 4:00 left in the game in their 48-7 win to retain the Iron Skillet Trophy...One game that generated little interest last week was the battle of the WAC?s weakest teams (Idaho and Utah St). The game was interesting in the fact that Utah St did not get their first lead of the game until :24 was left in the 3Q and yet they won by 25. Statistically they did dominate with a 580-271 yd edge as they had a 23 yd FG blk?d, were SOD at the Idaho 29 and were int?d at the Idaho 10 in the 1H. Diondre Borel is the type of QB that USt needs for its offense and in his first start rushed for 93 yds and passed for 191 but backup QB Setzer came in on the final drive and led a 97/12pl drive for a TD with 1:08 left to extend the margin...Georgia proved a lot this past week after dropping in the polls to #3 and playing in 99˚ heat, UGA had a 461-212 yd edge vs Ariz St. It was 7-0 mid-2Q when they got a key fumble recovery setting up a 46 yd drive for a TD. ASU went on a 75 yd drive but settled for a 25 yd FG with 2:38 left in the half and UGA raced 70/5pl to lead 21-3 at the half with a 227-82 yd edge and ended the game at the ASU 1 yd line...Northeastern put up 383 yds vs Syracuse and only trailed 27-21 with 6:33 left. At the Las Vegas Hilton Syracuse was a 10? pt fav over the IAA foe and only won by 9...Tulane?s first two opponents were teams coming off big upsets and both were in flat spots. TU outplayed both Alabama and E Carolina but came up short on the scoreboard. They dominated ULM with a 454-182 yd edge and appear much better than expected heading into the season...Marshall had over 200 yds rushing and 200 yds passing in their 34-27 upset of SM...Rutgers had a strange gameplan vs Navy. Their WR?s Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood had shredded Navy for close to 20 ypc the previous year but RU focused on passing to the TE and running the ball. They still had a 203-110 yd edge at the half but only led 14-6 as they fumbled at the Navy 20 with :20 left. RU got a TD with 7:38 left to lead 21-20 but Navy drove for a 24 yd FG with 2:06 left. Throwing to the TE, RU was int?d with 1:34 left and falls to 0-3...Houston which was bothered by the remnants of Hurricane Ike rallied and had a yardage edge in the game and nearly pulled out the win. They had a 473-422 yd edge vs Colorado St and got a TD with 2:31 left to pull within 28-25. They got down to the CSU 15 yd line but on 3rd & 6 were int?d in the EZ with :02 left...A surprising stat was that Tennessee actually had a 137-107 yd edge over Florida at the half even though the Gators appeared in control. Tenn had 2 long drives, the first ended on a fumble at the UF 3 and the 2nd saw them go for it on 4th & gl at the 1 and they were int?d in the EZ. UF led 20-0 at the half and cruised to a 30-6 win...Arkansas St dominated Middle Tennessee leading 24-0 and finishing with a 440-315 yd edge. They led 31-7 before MT got a TD mid-4Q...While S Carolina never punted, they did struggle vs Wofford who runs the option offense. Wofford only lost 27-20 in 2006 and SC did not put this one away leading just 16-13 before getting a TD with 1:58 left. SC did not punt but did get booed a couple times during the game...Toledo had a 598-420 yd edge vs Fresno but gave up a 29 yd FR for a TD and then a 29 yd drive for a TD after a long KR and FSU led 14-7 despite being outgained and outFD?d. FSU had just 5 FD?s at the half and UT led 21-17 but FSU managed to get the game to OT and UT went for 2 in the 2nd OT and came up short, 55-54. UT star RB Collins rushed for 138 yds and 2 TD?s but was inj?d in the 2Q and did not return.
GAME CHANGING PLAYS - Auburn led LSU 14-3 at the half and in the 3Q opened with a 12 pl drive. They had a FD at the LSU 19 when the key play of the game happened. On 3rd & 16 they were sk?d for a 10 yd loss taking them out of FG range and instead of adding to their lead, opted to punt and a 7 yd punt set up LSU at the 27. The 2nd key play was a 3rd & 10 39 yd TD pass to Mitchell which gave backup QB Lee the confidence for LSU?s comeback. AU did get a TD with 6:40 left to lead and forced a punt but punted back with 4:00 left. LSU got the score with an 18 yd TD pass when they were within FG range which was eerily reminiscent of the previous year when LSU got a TD on the last play with :02 left needing only a FG for the win.
MISLEADING FINALS - Interestingly BC QB Chris Crane was pulled for one series in the 1Q and backup QB Davis led BC on a 12pl drive for a missed 24 yd FG. Crane was booed when he returned. UCF led 7-3 at the half with a 167-110 yd edge and it was just 17-7 into the 4Q but BC got a long drive for a TD and UCF?s final 2 drives were SOD at the BC 31 and int?d and ret?d 31 yds to their 12 setting up 2 BC scores with a 25 yd FG with 3:54 left and a TD with 1:15 left making it a somewhat misleading final... Rice was playing without 3 defensive starters. Surprisingly in the 1H Texas only had a 351-241 yd edge and Rice had 3 trips inside the Texas 30 end in 3 points with 1 drive getting an amazing 11 snaps inside the 2 yard line but their 4th down pass fell incomplete (2 pass interference pen?s). Texas only led 31-10 late 3Q but went 80/4pl then after Rice had a bad snap on a 4th & 1 lost 22 yds, went 29/3pl and 47/10pl to gain margin... Maryland?s leading RB rusher was Morgan Green who had just 40 yds as Josh Portis had 98 and was #1 (see Injuries) and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey had 81. The Terps only had a 486-453 yd edge. EM got a TD with 8:03 left, 37-24. The Terps got a 43 yd TD pass with 6:18 left and after forcing a punt with starting QB Turner in, went 80/7pl and got an 8 yd TD run with 1:20 left, 51-24. EM got 1 FD but was int?d at the MD 24 with :11 left... In Wk 3 vs Iowa St, Iowa was outgained 325-244 but took an intentional safety with :26 left as they only won by 12. This time Iowa trailed Pitt 14-3 in the 2Q but brought Christensen back in off the bench and he guided them in the 2H. Iowa had a 361-259 yd edge for the game as Kirk Ferentz (grew up in Pittsburgh) brought his Hawkeyes to Heinz Field and Iowa?s uniforms, back in 1979 were patterned after the Steelers under then-HC Hayden Fry. Pitt led 21-17 but Iowa got a 39 yd FG with 10:58 left and neither team threatened to score after that...Kyle Reed hit his first 16 passes for SJSt and finished 23-26 for 165 yd. Trailing 16-10, SU sacked Reed on 4th down with 1:41 left (8th sk of the game). SJSt had jumped out to a 10-0 lead early 2Q. In a rivalry game that 10 years ago drew 70,000 fans, just 33,293 showed and amazingly Stanford got a 2 yd TD run with :25 left after that 4th down stop...Iowa St had 151 rushing and 155 passing for 306 yds but UNLV had 209 yds rushing and 245 passing for 454. The Rebels led huge, 28-7 but ISU rallied for 3 late TD?s including one with :03 left to force OT where UNLV won it.
INJURIES OF NOTE - Temple lost their outstanding QB Adam DiMichele on the first series vs Penn St but made a game of it early as the 1Q was scoreless. PSU dominated the 2Q scoring on all 5 poss and had a 338-32 yd edge at the half en route to their 45-3 win...Washington St lost starting QB Lopina late 2Q and then backup QB Rogers early in the 3Q as 3rd string QB Marshall Lobbestael hit 9 of 12 for 149 yds and 3 TD?s. The Cougars only led Portland St 17-3 at the half but rolled to a 48-9 win with a 638-246 yd edge... Northwestern vs Ohio was a strange game as NW QB Bach?r had 4 int?s but OU had 2 int, 2 fumbles, 2 blk?d FG?s and a missed FG. There were 2 injuries of note as NW RB Sutton was inj?d in the 3Q and NW rushed for -4 yds and failed to pick up a FD in the 3Q after he went out. OU LS Kyle Robbins was injured and that was partially responsible for the 3 missed/blk?d FG?s...Oregon lost their starting QB for the year prior to the season but still had bowl MVP Justin Roper on hand. Roper had a fine start to the year but was inj?d and is out about 3 wks. JUCO trans Masoli had played well but he was inj?d in the 2Q vs Boise with a concussion and was on the field in shorts for the 2H. Frosh QB Chris Harper struggled and true frosh Darron Thomas, who they had hoped to RS played but hit 0 of 3 passes with 2 int?s. Some of Boise?s TD?s came after a 3 yd punt by UO, a fmbl and 2 int?s. Boise?s VHT frosh QB Kellen Moore held up well in his first road start. In Autzen Stadium he hit 24 of 36 for 386... Maryland was playing without star RB D. Scott who was avg 135.7 on the ground but moved VHT QB Josh Portis to RB and he had 98 yds on 9 carries...N Carolina led VT 17-3 and would finish with a 307-268 yd edge but starting QB Yates was inj?d on the opening drive of the 3Q and VT was able to rally. NC was flagged 14 times for 141 yds while VT just 4 times for 21 yards. NC Backup QB Mike Paulus hit 3 of 8 passes for 23 yds with 2 int?s. Ball State?s leading WR Dante Love and spinal surgery which most likely ends his football career.
TURNOVERS MAKE A BIG IMPACT - TO?s can have a key impact in games and sometimes the timing of the TO and the type also has an effect. Mississippi had a frustrating loss to Vanderbilt. They had a 385-202 yd edge. They went on a 77/13pl drive that ate up 10:00 but settled for a 20 yd FG. Leading 10-0 they were at the Vandy 20 and were not only int?d by Hamilton (3 int) but it was returned 79 yds for a TD and a 14 point swing. Snead was int?d just before the half setting up a VU 34 yd FG to tie it 17-17. Ole Miss went on another long drive to open the 3Q but on 4th & gl from the 1 were SOD. They then fumbled the punt at the Miss 43 changing field position. After VU got a FG early 4Q to lead 20-17, UM missed a 47 yd FG, was int?d at midfield then on 1st & gl at the 7 with 2:53 left in the game looking to take the lead, McCluster fumbled into the EZ for a TB. Fittingly the game ended on an int at the VU 10...As mentioned, the timing of TO?s is huge and in Notre Dame?s case, so were a couple of key missed FG?s. The Irish took their 3rd drive to the MSU24 and appeared poised to take the lead but were int?d in the EZ for a TB (4:42 1Q). The Irish missed a FG with 9:34 left 2Q and then with 7:10 left in the half were int?d at their own 22 setting up the Spartans for a short TD and a 10-0 lead at the half despite a 149-111 Irish yd edge. The Irish opened the 3Q with 51/7pl drive but fumbled at the MSU 14. It was 13-7 in the 4Q when the Spartans got a FG with 9:10 left. ND went 57/10pl. They settled for a 41 yd FG which would have put it under one score but missed it and the Spartans not only ran out the clock, but thanks to Ringer?s 63 yd run went 77/7pl for a TD with 2:16 left in a game that was closer than the final score...In the 1H Miami, Oh had a 228-142 yd edge but settled for 2 FG?s including a 19 yarder after a 75/15pl drive and trailed 24-13. MU got a TD to open the 3Q and rec?d an onside kick and were driving for the lead down 24-20 and at the Cincy 33. The key play of the game happened when Mickens? ret an int 73 yds for a TD and a 14 pt swing. UC, who did not punt in the game took over with 8:50 left and went 84/12pl for a TD with 2:32 left to extend the margin...Utah had 24-9 FD & 440-191 yd edges vs Air Force. That usually results in a dominating 24 point win. They appeared in control up 9-3 and driving when they missed a 48 yd FG. AF, mid2Q, got a TD but then a key TO as they ret?d a fumble for a TD and stunningly led 16-9 at the half despite Utah having a 204-96 yd edge. Utah had also been int?d in the EZ from the 22 and fmbl?d at the AF 43...Florida St had an amazing 7 TO?s vs Wake Forest with Christian Ponder hitting 6 of 18 for 52 yds and 3 int?s, D Richardson hit 6 of 18 for 66 yds and 2 int and they also coughed up 2 fumbles in their 12-3 home loss to Wake. WF has beaten FSU by a combined 42-3 the last 2 meetings in Tallahassee.
KEY PLAYS - Colorado scored TD?s on their first 2 poss vs W Virginia in the Thur Night game incl a 28 yd drive after a fumble and had a 17-5 FD edge at half but WV had taken control in the 2H tying it at 14. They were at the CU 37 when the key play of the game happened. On 2nd & 10 they had a great call and 3rd string QB Starks took a handoff, had time and a wide open receiver on what would have been a TD which would have given WV a 21-14 lead with all of the momentum but he badly underthrew the ball. WV was called for a chop block on a hold on the next 2 plays and punted. Their final drive in regulation ended in a Hail Mary. Another key play happened in OT when a chip shot 23 yd FG bounced off the upright for WV and they lost by 3.
NEW STADIUMS - Tulsa had a newly remodeled HA Chapman Stadium and came out on fire in front of 30,000 fans as they rolled over New Mexico leading 35-0 at the half in a 56-14 win.
RECORD BREAKERS AND MAKING HISTORY - Toledo?s Alex Steigerwald kicked his 20th straight FG vs Fresno St, tying a MAC record... Ball St beat a BCS conf school for the first time in its history (now 1-43 vs BCS) but WR Dante Love, who came in leading the nation with 145.3 ypg receiving, was inj?d and is out for the year.
