Week 1 CFB

August 28 - September 1

Vanderbilt 34 at Miami Oh 13

First downs were even. Vandy only outgained Miami OH 360-340 yds. Vandy was +1 in trunovers and only had 2 penalties.
Miami OH should improve upon this effort and Vanderbilt will have a tough year in the SEC.

Temple 35 at Army 7

Army had 1 more first down. Army outgained Temple 284-250. Temple was +1 in turnovers, but had more penalties. Army had the ball almost a full quarter more than the owls. (14:00) Temple also had a fumble return and a kickoff return for a touchdown.
Army will have line value based on these numbers and Temple, although improved is still a bad team.

Utah 25 at Michigan 23

Utah dominated a game that they almost gave away. Utah had 5 more first downs and a 341-203 total yd advantage. The turnover battle was even, but Utah was penalized 15 times for 137 yds.
Utah is the real deal, and Michigan will continue to struggle to move the ball under the new system.

Memphis 24 at Mississippi 41

Memphis lost by 17 but had 9 more first downs and outgained Ole Miss 453-438 in total yds. Ole Miss won the turnover battle at +2, and benefited from 8 Memphis penalties. Memphis also controlled Time of Possession 34-26.
Mempis should be competitive when it returns to conference play.

Miss St 14 at La Tech 22

Miss St had 5 more first downs, and outgained LA Tech 348-269 in total yds. LA Tech won the turnover battle at +2 and was helped by 10 Miss. St penalties. Slight edge in T.O.P for Miss St. as well.
Miss. St played good enough to win on the road against a decent LA Tech team. They will have value going forward.

Bowling Green 27 at Pittsburgh 17

Pittsburgh lost the game but had 12 more first downs and a 393-254 total yds advantage. They also lost the turnover battle -3, but only were penalized 2 times. They controlled T.O.P as well. Inexcusable for this loss to this team.
Look for Pittsburgh to have value, and Bowling Green to receive too much credit for a win Pittsburgh gave them.

Oregon St 28 at Stanford 38

Oregon St. dominated a game they lost. They had 11 more first downs and outgaind Stanford 490-301 in total yards. The Beavers also lost the turnover battle (-3) and had 12 penalties.
Oregon St was the better team, although the scoreboad didn't show that.

Excellent thread. Week 2 is ripe for over reaction and the lines are all huge.

Bingo. Couldn't have said it any better myself. Found this analysis at College Football News...

Very simply, then, I can say that Michigan?s 23 points came from a minimal amount of genuine offensive production. That?s an objective statement. The evidence for this is as follows:

* Michigan?s first touchdown was the result of a fumbled Utah punt and a 15-yard pass interference penalty by the Utes that sustained the subsequent scoring drive, a drive of only 26 yards.

* Michigan?s second score?a field goal?came at the end of a 17-yard drive. And that field goal was a long one (51 yards).

* Michigan?s third score?a touchdown?consisted of 33 yards, in the form of one 33-yard pass play, UM?s best offensive scrimmage play by far.

* Michigan?s fourth and final score?a touchdown?came at the end of a 31-yard drive. On that drive, Utah coughed up 30 yards of defensive penalties, 15 on a face mask (at the end of what would have been a 12-yard sack, which created a gross yardage total of 27 on the penalty) and 15 more on a pass interference penalty.

So there you have it. If you take away major Utah penalties (of the 15-yard variety), Michigan gained?on its own merit?11, 17, 33, and 1 yards on the Wolverines? four scoring drives. That?s a grand total of 62 yards, making the average length of a Michigan scoring drive 15.5 yards. With an average drive length that small, one should be able to say that a subjective claim??Utah dominated Michigan??possesses considerable heft. If one were to say that Utah gift-wrapped almost all of Michigan?s points,

Rolltide, good stuff.

Michigan should not be 14 point favorite over anybody right now, including a MAC team.

I LOVE South Carolina only giving 9' this week based on the mis-perception of Vandy's win this week.

This is a great thread. Keep it up, Fast Eddie!

South Carolina's offense was frustrating at best, but their defense was stellar. Vandy will be lucky to score more than 10 points and could see them not getting more than 3-6.
