Clubs approve acquisitions of Marlins, Expos

Major League Baseball Press Release

The Major League Baseball Clubs approved the sale of the Florida Marlins to a group led by Jeffrey Loria as well as the acquisition of the Montreal Expos by Major League Baseball, it was announced today.

Loria and his group will purchase the Marlins from John Henry. The Clubs, meanwhile, bought the Expos and certain of its assets and will turn over operation of the Expos to the Commissioner's Office on a temporary basis.

"We believe Jeffrey Loria will make the Florida Marlins a great success," said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. "He is deeply committed to the Marlins' fans and the entire South Florida community. Baseball is very fortunate to have an owner of Jeffrey's experience and stature in a market as important as South Florida."

Loria said: "We are extremely excited about the upcoming 2002 season. Our commitment to the Marlins and to the South Florida community is complete. Our intent is to succeed by doing whatever is necessary to ensure that the fans will enjoy a relationship with the Marlins for generations to come."
