No I?m not going crazy. I just feel like the Tigers have some value in this line today. We have a pitching matchup that?s featuring a pitcher who?s 0-9 (Maroth) vs a pitcher who?s 2-4 (Garland).
Mike Maroth might be 0-9, but he?s had a lot of bad luck and even maybe some lack of run support, but he?s not as bad as his record shows and he?s not going to go winless for the entire season. He?s actually given up 4 runs or less in 7 of his 10 starts and today might just be the day he gets his first win.
Maroth did get knocked around a bit by Chicago back on April 5th of this season, but usually a pitcher will fair better the 2nd time around if he got hit hard. Maroth actually had 2 starts vs this same White Sox team last season and was 1-1 with a very good 3.29 ERA.
I feel the Tigers have a good chance to put up some runs in this game as they?ve had some previous success vs Chicago starter Jon Garland plus if you just take a look at the past series with the Indians you?ll see that they were hitting the ball very hard. In the opening game of the series, they scored 9 runs, and even though they looked to be slumping the remaining 3 games of that series, it?s a little deceptive as the wind was blowing in pretty strong the past 3 games. They actually had several balls that would have been home runs if the wind weren?t blowing in as strong as it was the last 3 games.
Garland in his liftetime vs Detroit might be 3-1 in 5 starts, but his ERA is 7.52 in those starts and he has given up 37 hits and walked 18 in just 26.1 innings vs the Tigers which gives him a WHIP of a whopping 2.09 career wise vs Detroit. A couple of the Tigers that ?own? him are Bobby Higginson and Dimitri Young who are a career 9 for 15 vs him including 3 home runs. Higgingson and Young are also Detroit?s 2 hottest hitters. Both are hitting .342 for the month of May.
Garland has been very hittable this season and if you take a look at his last 3 starts, you?ll see he?s actually walked more than he?s struck out (6 walks vs just 5 strikeouts).
Garland has also been giving up the long ball at an alarming rate this season having allowed 9 home runs in just 41.1 innings with 6 of those homers being given up at home in just 20.1 innings.
The White Sox bullpen has been struggling of late. Over the last 10 games, the Chicago pen has an ERA of 6.15 while the Tiger pen has been pretty good over the same 10 game span having an ERA of 3.34
Bottom line, I think the Tigers have enough going for them to justify playing them at the +192 line. I?ll take a shot!
