DUCE DOUBLES DOWN
Duce Staley has three 1,000-yard seasons to his credit since 1998, but the 28-year-old Philadelphia running back is a lonesome man these days.
Staley was expected to split time in the Eagles' backfield last year with Correll Buckhalter, but Buckhalter suffered a torn ACL that sidelined him for the entire 2002 season. The Eagles had no choice but to rely on Staley to fuel their offense last year. It worked out pretty well. Staley racked up 1,029 rushing yards, caught 51 passes for 541 yards and scored eight total touchdowns. The Eagles, meanwhile, won the NFC East and came within one victory of a Super Bowl appearance.
So what's the controversy about?
Staley, who is scheduled to earn $2.2 million in 2003 as part of the final year of his current contract, skipped the team's two-week offseason mini-camp, which was non-mandatory. However, his absence ruffled the feathers of more than a few honchos in the Eagles nest. The message was clear: Duce wants an extension.
Outlook: It wasn't a huge surprise when the Eagles opened training camp and Staley was a no-show. The versatile running back wants to be rewarded for his years of solid service. But the Eagles don't want to commit to Staley with Buckhalter healed from his knee injury and second-year rusher Brian Westbrook pushing for playing time. Staley's role on the team is unclear. Even if he sorts this contract out with the team, Staley could be a situational player. In any case, the Eagles would be losing a great pass-catching RB if they don't soothe the bad feelings with Staley. However, the team isn't going to do anything until it sees Buckhalter carry the football and take a few hits
