San Francisco?s offense has gotten off to a horrible start to its first year post-Bonds, hitting only two home runs and scoring just 12 times


Cain allowed three hits, four walks and struck out five in 5 2-3 scoreless innings of Tuesday?s 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In six April starts since the beginning of last season, Cain has a 1.33 ERA but only a 1-1 record to show for it.

The right-hander had no luck against the Padres in 2007, going 0-3 with a 2.41 ERA in six starts - all losses for the Giants. The year before, however, he was 3-0 with a 1.33 ERA in four starts versus San Diego (4-3).

The Padres counter with Greg Maddux (0-0, 4.50), who has been outstanding against San Francisco lately.

The four-time Cy Young Award winner is 5-0 with a 2.83 ERA in nine starts versus the Giants since May 9, 2003. In three starts against San Francisco last season, Maddux went 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA.

Cabrera, 9-18 with a career-high 5.55 ERA last year, struggled in his season debut Wednesday against Tampa Bay, allowing six runs and six hits in four innings. He also walked five and gave up two home runs, but escaped without a decision when Baltimore went on to win 9-6.

Seattle will counter with Carlos Silva (1-0, 1.29), who?s looking to follow up an impressive debut with Seattle last week.

Silva, whose start Monday was pushed up a day because of Erik Bedard?s hip injury, pitched seven innings Wednesday against Texas, giving up one run and three hits in a 4-1 win.
