Jeff Nelson is a HP in LA/Pitts game. He had a 2.40 SO/walk ratio last season.
Brian Gorman at Detroit game. He was 22-10 for home team last season.
this is all for me today. Gotta run. if anyone else wants to list umps in later games, feel free to post!
ump assignments from the "gameday" link for each game (creates a popup window) on the scoreboard page at mlb.com.
I don't usually pay attention to umps until middle of May, or so. Many of their tendencies don't carry on the same from one season to the next (but if you dig in these data, you do find exceptions!)
but I just wanted to make everyone aware of these links today.
At retrosheet you can look up every game an ump has officiated in.
MLB's official ump page has list of umps, crews, rules, etc...The biographies can be useful as some umps are "homers" for their local teams.
Managers and pitchers pay especial attention to umpires, and know their tendencies, as does every professional handicapper I've met. The general public usually ignores them.
I remember some old baseball cappers saying that if you hang out in the bars these umps go to (never a bar frequented by fans or players) and talk to these guys, you'd learn tons to help your handicapping.
