as anticipated, 'canes outlasted the friars sunday night to push posting record to 11-10. for tonight:
asu +4: while i'm happy with new wolfpack coach lowe, i never doubted for a moment that herb sendek is a very skilled and dedicated college coach. he just wasn't a good fit for nc state and the acc. sendek is particularly skilled in developing new talent and teaching them to play within themselves. he also teaches tenacious defense. i mention these things because herb has a boatload of promising new talent at asu this year, and sendek is the right man to bring them out of the gate. on the subject of boats, from everything i've seen duke transfer boateng should be ready to go tonight, and he is truly first team all pac10 material. sendek has cagily waited until the last minute to take his team to the islands; this will help avoid distractions for his young team, and gives his opponent very little looks. while i accept the premise that it's usually best to arrive at these venues early, i think illini coach weber overplayed the travel card here by coming a week early to play hawaii - too much down time on the islands tends to allow young minds to wander off of basketball. playing these early season tourneys is all feel, and here i see a clear coaching edge and a talent edge to the sun devils. i think they could pull off the upset.
