First Responder Bowl

western kentucky (-3) 4 units. and starting to think i should have put even more on them. wmu has a pretty balanced offense, led by levante bellamy, who averages 5.7 yards/carry. the toppers have a solid run d, only giving up 3.7 yards/carry. in fact, their d has been solid overall, only giving up 20 points/game.

on the other side of the ball, wku relies on the arm of ty storey (if they don't call him toy storey, i'd be very disappointed). storey has had a very good senior year, averaging 7.5 yards/attempt while throwing 12 tds and 5 INTs. wmu's pass defense is not good. in terms of defensive pass efficiency, they rank 78th. but it gets worse. they allow opposing qbs to complete 67% of their passes for an average of 7.2 yards/attempt. wr's jackson and pearson could have big days for wku.

if wku can jump on top and take bellamy out of the game, huge advantage to the toppers.

one of the things i like to look at for bowl games is how well do the teams perform away from home? well, wku was 5-0 ATS and 4-1 SU on the road. wmu was 1-5 ATS and SU on the road. so wmu really, really relied on the home field advantage. two of their SU losses were at 9-point favs. huge edge for wku there.

now for the one negative for wku, and this reminded me why i "only" put 4 units on them. coach ty helton is in his first year with the team. the fucking kiss of death in bowl games. on the bright side, wmu is 1-8 in bowl games, but only 0-1 under tim lester.

Redbox Bowl

Redbox Bowl

redbox is still a thing? and they still have money to sponsor a bowl game? huh. well, good for them.

cal (-6.5) 4 units. i get jeff tedford against lovie smith, and i'm laying less than a td? sweet! i mean, it sucks that it's basically a home game for cal, because i hate betting bowl teams that didn't travel. but i still love the bears. the bears against lovie smith. what a matchup. :)

this is pretty simple for me. garbers is back for cal, and he makes all the difference for that team. they were 6-0 in games he started and didn't get knocked out of by injury.

it's funny, because i saw that they averaged 323 yards/game, which is anemic. and then i saw it's still 4 more yards/game than illinois. on defense, cal has been vulnerable to the pass, but their run defense only gives up 3.5 yards/carry. and illinois relies on establishing the ground game. in fact, this looks like a perfect matchup for cal. illinois' defense is very balanced - they give up over 200 yards/game through the air and on the ground.

Music City Bowl

Music City Bowl

mississippi st (-5) 4 units. very simple for me.

1) the bulldogs' starting qb was knocked out of the game because of a practice incident, and the line didn't move. and now it's creeping up.

2) mississippi st averages 5.5 yards/carry, which is 7th in the country. louisville allows 5.5 yards/carry, which is 123rd in the country.

3) louisville's head coach is in his first year with the team.

Orange Bowl

Orange Bowl

virginia 1st H (+7.5) 1 unit
virginia (+14.5) 2 units
virginia (ML) 1 unit to win 4.4
under (54.5) 1 unit. taking a shot with the cavs. bronco mendenhall against dan mullen is a big mismatch. why the hell it took an injury for mullen to play trask is beyond me. franks was a turnover machine. anyway, if virginia can bounce back from the trouncing in the acc title game, they can be competitive tonight. bryce perkins' legs will be a big factor when the pass protection breaks down. and it will break down. he needs to have a huge game, because the cavs won't be able to run the ball today.

on the other side of the ball, i am concerned about the cavs' pass defense. while they only allow opposing qbs to complete 56% of their passes, they are giving up just over 8 yards/attempt. that's terrible. they need to apply some pressure on trask.

both teams are in the top 7 in sacks. but trask is a lot less mobile than perkins. perkins does take a ton of sacks, but i'm hoping he's ready to run today.

i even made a small bet on the cavs to score first. it was +165, so i figured what the hell? LET'S GO, HOOS!

Smitty....... U had me laughing when I heard the name Jeff Tedford. He is know for his tenure at Cal, but stopped coaching them in 2012.
My brother's are Fresno State Alumni, and he just stepped down as coach, due to health reasons.
Justin Wilcox has done a good job as HC, for Cal!
And u r correct, I dig the Cal QB returning!
Only in college, do we keep names associated w schools.....👍

Best of luck brother!!

i'll take 2-1-1!

i gave up on mississippi state when, up 14-10, they kept throwing the fucking ball. gibson had 8 carries for 54 yards. 8 fucking carries. for the life of me, i have no idea how any of these OCs get hired.

hahaha yeah, i realized later what i did. oh well. same point applies. either of those guys could coach circles around lovie smith.

i love garbers. even last year, when his numbers weren't great, he showed he was a winner. that team played hard for him. now he has the numbers to back it up.

Hey Oxnard, I'll do ya one better. I'm a Fresno State alum, and I actually shot photos of Tedford when he was the quarterback at Fresno State back in the 80's. He turned out to be a helluva coach man. Took the Bulldogs from the worst team in the country, to definitely back on the map, in less than one year. I pray he stays healthy because he's been a great guy for Fresno State. He's staying on I believe in a consulting role.

All good Smitty!
Gabers looked GREAT!
I just expected the Cal defense to play more how I expected.
Both offenses moved the ball well on the 1H!
Great call on that game!
Cal and Utah are different, cause they tend to focus on defense, in the Pac 12.
Cal is always underrated

That's awesome ❤️them Dogs!
FSU had a very bad year.
I went to the Minnesota game, and thought they had them..... And blew it!
My bro told me that during the season, Tedford got a cardiac stent.
Nice to hear from a Fresno State Alum!!!!
