Tonight's Game
The Bruins visit the Capitals tonight in the fourth and final game between these teams this season and the second of two games of this season's series at the MCI Center. The Capitals will be looking to extend their unbeaten streak to four straight games. Washington is coming off a stifling 1-0 shutout of the Florida Panthers in South Florida on Saturday night.

The Capitals weathered another storm of injuries, gaining three of a possible four points over the weekend despite missing seven regulars from the lineup. Washington employed an unorthodox on-ice alignment, using three defenseman in a 2-1-2 formation with a defenseman - usually Sergei Gonchar or Ken Klee - serving as a "rover" in the middle of the ice. Five of the Capitals' sick and wounded are listed as day-to-day. If none are able to return to action against Boston, expect to see the "3-D" alignment again, with 10 forwards and eight defensemen dressing for the game.

Even if one or more of Peter Bondra (flu), Jaromir Jagr (groin), Brendan Witt (thumb), Ulf Dahlen (foot) and Joe Sacco (flu) are able to return against the Bruins, the Capitals may still use the "3-D" formation, at least on a part-time basis.

The alignment proved effective in shutting down the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday. The Leafs, one of the league's highest scoring teams, managed three goals against the Capitals but one came in the first 21 seconds of the game and another came on a power play. At one point in the second period, Toronto went more than 12 minutes without a shot on goal.

Flu has bugged this team

The Bruins begin a run of 14 games in 30 days tonight in Washington, leading up to the NHL's Olympic break. Success during this period should go a long way toward solidifying their position in the Eastern Conference.

Coach Robbie Ftorek said he's just hoping the club can stay healthy.

Defenseman Don Sweeney was the latest victim of the flu, but he should be back in the lineup tonight against the Capitals at the MCI Center.

Goaltender Byron Dafoe, who left Thursday night's game against Los Angeles because of illness, was one of just a dozen players who practiced at the FleetCenter yesterday. He said he'll be fine to play tonight.

''This was my first hard practice since I caught whatever I caught,'' said Dafoe. ''I was a little winded, but that's expected. I should feel great [today].''

Ftorek said a good portion of his team is down for reasons that have nothing to do with its 5-4 loss to the Islanders Saturday.

''Everybody is a little down physically,'' said Ftorek. ''There are a bunch of tough tests coming up. A lot of guys didn't skate because they are battling [the flu]. Some of them have the symptoms, so we have to wade through it like everybody else is.''

The team's new acquisition, forward Benoit Hogue, who was ostensibly dealt from Dallas for Scott Pellerin, is expected to skate with his new club this morning, but Ftorek said he wasn't sure Hogue would play.

Ftorek said he also was expecting a call-up from Providence - likely a defenseman - this morning.

''Having as many guys as we do on the bubble, we'd probably be smart to bring somebody,'' said Ftorek. ''If it's the guy we think it's going to be, it's a defenseman, but that could change.''

The run of flu victims - Sergei Samsonov went through it last week - is due partly to the intense schedule.

''When you're going at a high, high tempo for a long time, then you're going to start letting little things creep in,'' said Ftorek. ''Some of those things did creep in and [the Islanders] took advantage of them and boom, we ended up behind the eight-ball. We still came back really hard and we were right there knocking on the door, but sometimes you don't finish that off.

''You have guys who are playing their hearts out for 45 games and it starts to wear on them and they start to get a little fatigued,'' he continued. ''The dangerous part of this is that now you can have injuries creep in when you have tired people. You really have to make sure you use your whole bench. You have to change your game plan a little bit.''

But because of the condensed workload, Ftorek said the dog days of winter are here now rather than in late February, when they normally arrive in a non-Olympic year.

Frogy, and everyone. Get this, not only is she sitting 7 rows off the ice, but she just called me via the cell phone and she caught a puck!!! Too much!

Also, although it is like watching paint dry, I like what I am seeing from the Washington D tonight. This 3 D system may be the norm for a while for them.
