Karpovtsev still recovering from 'upsetting' weekend
By Tim Sassone Daily Herald Sports Writer
Posted on January 28, 2002
BOSTON - It was a scary weekend for Alexander Karpovtsev.

The Blackhawks defenseman spent most of Friday night and Saturday nauseated and vomiting after taking an Al MacInnis slap shot to his stomach in the 2-1 victory over St. Louis.

Karpovtsev was struck late in the first period by a puck off the stick of the NHL's hardest shooter and had to leave the game. He was back at practice Sunday and expects to play tonight against the Bruins.

"I tried to take a normal breath but couldn't," Karpovtsev said. "Then between periods, I started throwing up. I couldn't eat or drink anything the next day. It felt like the stomach flu, but they called it a stomach contusion."

Karpovtsev said he never saw the shot until it was too late. MacInnis uses a stick curved like a sand wedge.

"It went up right away," Karpovtsev said. "It was crazy. Usually the stomach is the best place to get hit, no pain, not like on the side. It was a hard shot."

Goalie Jocelyn Thibault, who once had a finger on his glove hand broken by a MacInnis slap shot, couldn't believe it when he saw Karpovtsev take the puck in the chest area.

"I have protection, at least. He didn't," Thibault said. "I just thought, wow, when it hit him. I'm glad he's all right."

Coach Brian Sutter isn't sure if Karpovtsev will play tonight.

"If he felt fine, he would have come back (to the game)," Sutter said. "We'll see (today). That will be my decision."

The Hawks have two games remaining before the all-star break, but Sutter refuses to look even that far ahead.

"I'm not looking at it as two games," Sutter said. "We're not even thinking like that. It's like preparing for a playoff series. You don't go in saying we're preparing for seven games. You take it one game at a time, and that's what we're doing this week."

The Hawks play at New Jersey on Wednesday. After that, Sutter, Alex Zhamnov, Eric Daze and Kyle Calder head to Los Angeles for all-star weekend. Sutter is the assistant coach for North America, while Daze will play for North America and Zhamnov for the World team. Calder will participate in Friday's Young Stars game.

The Hawks haven't forgotten the first time they faced Boston on Oct. 28 at the United Center. That's the night they blew a 3-1 lead in the final 20 seconds as the Bruins pulled the goaltender and got goals from Bill Guerin and Joe Thornton.

"Anybody who watched that game knew who the better team was," Sutter said.

The Bruins are like the Hawks in that they have been able to maintain their high level of play after a strong start.

"The two of us have both been very consistent," Sutter said. "They made the big trade (Jason Allison to Los Angeles for Jozef Stumpel and Glen Murray). They signed Martin Lapointe (as a free agent). They made the big trade last year for (Bill) Guerin, and their goaltending has been very good.

"That's not even talking about Joe Thornton, who you knew all along was going to be good."

Thornton, the No. 1 pick in the 1997 draft, leads the NHL in scoring with 55 points, having overtaken Calgary's Jarome Iginla.

Still not touching the B's...One game is not enough to prove that they are out of their recent slump. I didn't get to watch Saturday nights game against FLA so all I really know about the game is what I read.

FYI - Stag is on the B's tonight in the POD thread. Good luck Stag - I'm rooting for you.
