Sunday gab:
The relief curse taketh away, and the relief curse giveth. I thought it would never end ... this June relief curse that I've been on. It continued today with ace reliever Quantrill giving up a long ball, and with Fetters blowing a perfectly good Dodgers W.
Maybe now it's finally over.
Mike Piazza for president.
My sincere condolenscences to anyone who was on both the Dodgers and the Yankees today ... believe me, with what I've seen these past two weeks, I know how it feels.
Time to move one.

Monday June 18th 2001
------------------------------------------

DR=days rest
NP=number of pitches
RC=record as starter
TRC=team's record as starter
WHIP=(walks + hits) / innings pitched
ERA=expecting relief attonement
biggrin.gif

... too ironic ... I was planning that in the 7th inning of Yanks/Mets, assuming I was bagged, down 7-2 after all!
3RATE=rating of pitcher's last 3 starts weighted towards more recent ones...
...min=6, max=30

Note on 3RATE: Obviously there are a number of factors that you must consider when handicapping any contest. I don't advocate wagering on a team simply because their starter has been pitching better lately -- i.e. has a higher 3RATE. I have been posting how teams with the higher 3RATE have been performing simply because when I first started posting this figure I noticed a strong correlation between a large differential and a win by the higher total. If this somehow continues then I will go back and calculate a long-term record as well as a unit total based on moneyline wagers on these games. I certainly haven't been on them all; a bad previous start by a strong pitcher can greatly affect this number as the last start counts for half the value. The second last counts for 1/3rd, and the third last counts for 1/6th.

Stats are from Yahoo save for opponents batting and slugging averages which are from Baseball Weekly (games through June 11th so excluding the last start for each pitcher on today's board). BA's (LH or RH) are listed when over .280 or under .220, and SLG's are listed when over .500 or under .400. BA's.

NAME...DR...NP...RC/TRC...WHIP...ERA...3RATE
Levrault...4....95.....1-1/2-3.....1.45.....3.86.....17
Reith.......2*....14....0-3/0-4.....1.45.....5.79.....10*
...Levrault LH .302, SLG .508
...Reith LH .306, RH .282, SLG .600
...*Reith 3RATE based on starts May 22nd to June 2nd before he was sent down to Triple-A. Appearance 3 days ago was 1 IP of relief vs Colorado, 3 up 3 down with 1 K.
--------------------
Irabu......4......99.....0-2/0-3.....1.50....4.86......15
Rusch....4......91.....3-5/5-8.....1.81....6.43......8
...Irabu LH .320, RH .333, SLG .500
...Rusch LH .431, RH .310, SLG .512
--------------------
Clement...4....84......3-5/6-8.....1.49....5.04.....15.5
Glavine....4....88......6-5/7-7.....1.60....4.95......6.5
...Clement LH .296, RH .218
...Glavine acknowledged that he has been fighting shoulder pain all season; something is obviously wrong with Glavine, who has been bad all season and terrible lately
--------------------
Astacio....3.....99.....5-7/5-9.....1.34....5.28.....10
Reynolds...4....93....6-5/6-5.....1.39....4.94.....20
...Reynolds LH .319, RH .294
...Astacio has been hit or miss all season; it has been miss (i.e. terrible) in 3 or his last 4 including 2 straight
...Reynolds has been just the opposite lately, really turning his season around; if you think his LH and RH are large now (these are after 10 starts -- he lost 1-3 to Twins in 11th) then check these numbers out from a month ago: (after 5 starts) LH .375, RH 338, and SLG .575 (vs .494 after 10)
--------------------
Tapani.....4....48......8-2/9-3....1.42....4.52......12
Kile..........5....103.....7-6/7-7....1.38....3.48....12.5
...Tapani (LH .221), RH .313
...Kile LH .329
...Kile 3 straight L's
...note that slugging outfielder J.D. Drew (21 HR, .300+) broke his right hand yesterday and will miss about a month
--------------------
$$$$$$$$$
--------------------
Parris......5....93......3-5/4-8.....1.83....5.43......12.5
Ponson...4....103....3-4/5-5.....1.38....4.48......14.5
...Parris LH .455, (RH .223), SLG .571
...Ponson RH .282
...Ponson was pulled from his last start with stiffness in his right forearm
...living in T.O. I get to see waaay to much of never-has-been Parris; if anyone has a pack of gum they want to trade for him then I'll contact Gord Ash
--------------------
Clemens....4...115....8-1/11-3....1.23...3.95.....20
Weaver.....4...114....6-6/7-7......1.31...3.24.....18
...Clemens SLG .379
...Weaver SLG .380
...Clemens has won his past 4 starts, 2 against Clev, vs Balt, and vs Mont, 1.21 WHIP & 3.72 ERA in those 4 starts
--------------------
Durbin......5...119....4-5/4-5.....1.35...4.47......19
Buehrle....4.....99.....5-3/7-5.....0.95...3.14......24
...Durbin RH .315
...Buehrle RH .182, SLG .348
...Buehrle 4 straight W's; 0.68 ERA over past 5 starts
--------------------
Moyer.....3....71......8-2/10-3....1.34....4.66.....14
Zito........4....112.....3-6/7-7......1.45....5.24.....13
...Zito SLG .391
...Zito has not picked up a W since April 24th; still, last 3 lefties M's have faced were Bohanon, Oliver, and Davis, not exactly hard throwers like Zito. They faced Milton May 23rd, to make it 4 straight wins vs lefties -- lost to Lilly a few days earlier, the day after beating a cold David Wells. M's have been cruising, but their competition over the past month has consisted predominantly of the Padres, the Devil Rays, the Royals, the Rangers, and the Orioles. M's bullpen got a workout yesterday with Sele floundering. I haven't yet seen the line but the A's at somewhere close to even$$ would interest me, despite their nada vs Rueter yesterday. Just a thought.
