Expos-Blue Jays Preview

June 30, 2002

GAME: Montreal Expos (42-37) at Toronto Blue Jays (32-45). ADVERTISEMENT

TIME: Sunday, 1:05 p.m. EDT.

Jose Vidro has been a big part of Montreal's success in interleague play this season. However, the Expos might have to play without him when they complete their series with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Vidro is batting .313 (20-for-64) with two homers and nine RBIs against AL teams, including a 1-for-3 effort in Saturday's 5-4 loss in 10 innings. The second baseman, though, left the game in the sixth inning after feeling a twinge in his right knee. He is day-to-day.

The Expos lost for the fourth time in seven games, but are 12-5 in interleague play after going just 8-10 in 2001.

If Vidro is unable to play, the Expos will likely look to Vladimir Guerrero, who along with Jose Macias and Mike Barrett provided homers on Saturday.

Guerrero went 2-for-5, giving him hits in 19 in his last 20 games.

Tomokazu Ohka starts for the Expos, looking to rebound from Tuesday's 4-1 loss in Pittsburgh, his first since May 16.

Prior to that defeat, the Expos' ERA leader was 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA in six starts. The 26-year-old Japanese pitcher has yet to lose consecutive starts this season.

The Blue Jays won for just the fifth time in their last 16 games, but they improved to 17-13 all-time against the Expos.

Rookie Eric Hinske, who hit the winning homer for Toronto, finished 3-for-5, extending his hitting streak to eight games. The 24-year-old third baseman, acquired from Oakland for Billy Koch in the offseason, is batting .452 (14-for-31) with three doubles, two homers and six RBIs during his run.

He leads all AL rookies in home runs (14) and RBIs (44).

EXPOS PROBABLE STARTER: Ohka (7-4, 3.02 ERA). Ohka, who allowed three earned runs in five innings to the Pirates on Tuesday, hadn't allowed more than two runs in each of his previous six starts. BLUE JAYS PROBABLE STARTER: Esteban Loaiza (3-4, 5.37 ERA). Loaiza hasn't won since May 31, going 0-3 with a 9.41 ERA in five starts since. The Blue Jays won in his last outing, 20-11 in Tampa Bay on Tuesday, but the right-hander went just 3 1-3 innings and didn't get the decision. He gave up a season-high seven runs and nine hits but extended his streak without a walk to 10 1-3 innings. He was a 9-3 loser in Montreal on June 15, surrendering three runs over 5 1-3 innings.
