Dems Invoke FDR

Friday, February 04, 2005

By Brit Hume

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Dems Invoke FDR

Senate Democrats gathered at the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial (search) today to invoke the image of FDR in calling on President Bush to remove private accounts from his Social Security (search) proposal. But it turns out that FDR himself planned to include private investment accounts in the Social Security program when he proposed it.

In a written statement to Congress in 1935, Roosevelt said that any Social Security plans should include, "Voluntary contributory annuities, by which individual initiative can increase the annual amounts received in old age," adding that government funding, "ought to ultimately be supplanted by self-supporting annuity plans."

Last night, Senate minority leader Harry Reid (search) likened the president?s proposal to allow Americans to divert a portion of payroll taxes into personal security investment accounts to "gambling." But in 1999, the Nevada Democrat proposed something very similar on our own "FOX News Sunday" saying, "Most of us have no problem with taking a small amount of the Social Security proceeds and putting it into the private sector."

Name Change?

The National Council for Research on Women (search) will host Teresa Heinz Kerry (search) at an awards dinner next month. But to read their program, you?d never know the woman they?re honoring is the wife of former Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. A spokesperson for the Council says that the Heinz Family Philanthropies directed them to drop the Kerry name in their promotional materials. And that Teresa only used it while her husband was running for president.

But Philanthropies President Jeffrey Lewis refused to confirm that, saying that nothing has really changed since the campaign. Heinz or Heinz-Kerry is known to keep portraits of both her husbands in her various residences.

Answering the Allegations

Syria and Iran are responding to the rebuke the president gave them as terrorist sponsors in last night?s State of the Union (search) address. A Syrian spokesman says the president?s accusations were based on "inaccurate reports." And that "everyone knows that Syria is cooperating and fighting terrorism."

And an Iranian spokesman says Mr. Bush?s speech was "a repetition of his former ground less claims and accusations." Adding that the president has "closed his eyes on the realities of Iran."

Meanwhile, Iranian opposition groups tell Reuters News Service that Iran has tested a crucial triggering mechanism for a nuclear weapon, despite a promise to end all nuclear testing. And the Financial Times reports that they have purchased Ukrainian missiles designed to carry warheads.

So what? The Presidents can't even get Republicans behind his SS scam. How is it news worthy what Mrs. Kerry calls herself, and do you really expect our enemies to roll over and play dead?

But I suppose when the great terrorist and crime fighter Bush proposes to cut the local law enforcement budget the Neocons would rather talk about what Mrs. Kerry calls herself.

I wouldn't call it a scam and haven't decided if I am for it or against it yet--with out knowing the specifics

I do know where liberals and conservatives differ on issue.

Liberals think the gov should (and can) control on lifes better than they can--and they probably can if you included only liberal population.

If sumed up--
Would you rather have gov hold your money and give you what if feels it should and if you happen to die before retirement or early into it they keep everything you paid in.

or do feel you are smart enough to put a portion of your money in fixed income you can't lose that YOU own and gov can't borrow against. If you die before retirement or early into it YOU keep funds not gov.

Given to 2 choices you have to be a liberal to take 1st option --to a conservative it is a no brainer-with only " how its going to be paid for" as only possible drawback--and we have no answers yet--

No Dogs, once again it is not that simple. Unfortunately many middle class and poor people depend on SS. Just the mere fact that these people are poor suggests that they do not know how to invest their money. Also, the poor and middle class put a much higher percentage of their money in ss than do the rich. And that raises the stakes for these people. So I think the guaranteed money, the way it is, is the way to go. It is another scam of the Neocons to further split the classes and drive more people into poverty and eliminate the middle class by not having this money availible to them when they retire. Does it have to be tweaked, yes, of course it does, but the massive changes the Neocons are suggesting are not healthy.

Really??? When the last time you saw a money market-treasury Bond-CD or any quaranteed investment "lose money"

Show me "just one person" that has had SS since the beginning of time who would be MUCH better off if their entire SS has went into quaranteed fund seperate from gov.

Surley even the most liberal person can figure that out--if not might I suggest you take --neocon money management 101 ;)

The sad thing is I am sure most other liberals think same way.

How is this for simple math. A formula that true conservatives not only understood but championed before getting brain washed by Fox and Neocon radio. Eliminate the deficit and SS will take care of itself. Talk about economics 101 Geesh!

what happens with medicare and medicaid?...people on disability?...and what happens to people that have little or no knowledge of the stock market?....

maybe thay can`t grasp the nuances of investing in the market?......

i understand that people will have the option to stay in the old system.....but what you might have is a two-tier system that breaks along educational and/or personal resource/affluence lines that will water down what will be left of the old system....

this one sounds very scary to me...talk about class warfare...

i need to hear more...right now,i`m leaning democrat on this one...

why dont we raise our level of expectations for once GW instead of consantly lowering them

when you lower expectations, you get lower results

why are we always catering to the underachievers and rewarding ignorance and laziness?

take away the umbilical cord and give people a chance!!

Freeze, why would you eliminate SS and raise the retirement age when this administration can't even create jobs for people now. Not only can they not create jobs but they can't create jobs while running two wars! That has to be a new level of accomplishment. I suppose our seniors could work at Walmart to survive.

I would have thought you'd abandoned the economy thing like rest of liberals after last month report of 5.2--lowest since 9-11--lower than after Clintons 1st term
Lowest crime rate in 30 years
lowest inflation and interest rates in decades
highest home ownership ever incluing minorities

You better fall back on the wmd's like kennedy-boxer and the rest ;)

Just a quick note on this Social Security argument. Believe me, there's going to be plenty of time to address this in the coming weeks and months.

For right now let's try to set the record straight on the current Democratic line that Bush is trying to replace guarantees with speculation.

Know this: There is no guarantee that you will receive any Social Security benefits. Nowhere in the laws of the United States is there any guarantee that anyone will receive Social Security benefits.

You would think that the media would take the time to investigate this "guarantee" nonsense and report .... then again, you wouldn't.

ahh but the liberals want to brainwash the people with all their government entitlements

they want the people so powerless that all we can do is beg for another handout and be at their mercy

financial independence never has and never will be a goal of the liberal socialists

medicare....medicaid....disability?.....

what`s the plan,guys?....we can`t just ignore these issues....social security is unbelievably complex...

how can you be a proponent of a plan without knowing some specifics?....

let`s wait and hear a little more before we start drawing battle lines.....

like it or not, freeze, there is....and will always be.... a segment of the population that needs the safety net...that aren`t doctors....that aren`t educated....that can`t handle their own retirement.....that`s fact...

it would be nice if everyone could be self-sufficient....that`s just not reality...

this society...any society, for that matter,is made up of over achievers and underachievers...sometimes the underachivers aren`t just lazy...maybe they just aren`t capable of becoming stock market gurus..of being responsible......do you put them to sleep?

and by breaking down the current system...diluting it,in effect,no one knows what the long term affect will be...

i`d like to see everyone carry their own water....

that`s utopia....it`s just not reality...

i`m waiting to hear more...before i go off on a tangent....

just based on my political persuasion...

ever heard of charity instead of the government?

thats where the poor and disabled should be sheltered

much better assistance and accountability

in most cases feeding the laziness makes things worse....nothing is further from compassion than the current state of government welfare where alcoholism, crime, abuse, and frank not giving your child a chance run rampant

time to clean up this system, declare it a failure, and go to local charity groups to help these folks
