Anybody see the HBO special on Barry Goldwater? Pretty fascinating political figure.

I saw the special last week. I wasnt alive during his Pres. camp. and the first thing i ever heard about him was that he was a racist. Whoever told me that was obviousally a moron. I identified more with his conservatism than I do with any current figure. I liked the clip they showed at the end when he said something to the effect of "Once Im gone, they will probably call me a liberal" (and some commentator did right before they showed the clip)-on the grounds that he had no problem with gays and was pro chocie. Frankly, we need more conservatives like him around today. Get back to what its really about, not all this crap about telling me what I can and cant do with my money and who I have to give it to, who can have sex with who-all while spending more than any democrat has in the past 50 years. Conservatism isnt supposed to be about constitutional ban on gay marriage, expansion of executive powers, religion and spending money-quite the opposite. Anyways, all this to say I really enjoyed the documentary, wish i would of recoreded it.

Yeah, I agree with your comments samayam. He was a Libertarian before that was identified. I think most of us would identify with a guy like that right about now. Unfortunately, everything is so partisan in such ridiculous ways now, that his views would get completely misrepresented by both sides. Both of my parents liked him a lot - which is weird because they were opposites politically. After seeing the documentary, I understand how they both supported him. I feel for the guy, there was no way at all that he was going to be understood in 1964. He was in the most un-winnable election of all time.

Yeah, for sure. Thats what I consider my self, a conservative-libertarian-and thats what america needs. someone to just use some commonsense and apply it to the constitution-is that too much to ask? I think his kind is a dying/dead breed, and tahts a shame-i wish the libertarian party had their chit together and was a little more reasonable so they could make a difference. he was in the most un-winnable election of all time, and he was the most "un-winnable" canidate because he spoke from his heart and stood for what he really beleived in, and spoke the truth as he saw it-not one elected offical does that today.
