i am not a fan of shock tv/radio. i don't like when the on air personality belittles it's listeners or viewers. i really did not know what to expect with michael savage's show on msnbc. i watched his show twice since it's debut on msnbc. the first time i saw him i was in total shock with the way he treated callers who opposed him on issues.i thought that tv sunk to an all time low, which is pretty low with all of the reality type shows that are over crowding our air waves. i watched the show again just to make sure that the first show was somehow a fluke. but it wasn't. savage again constantly belittled & called anyone who dared to disagree with him a jerk or moron.
there are a few issues that i happen to agree with savage (ie the war in iraq, illegal immigration, etc.) but imo, the way he "carries on" over shadows any of his views. i, for one, think msnbc did the right thing by canning savage.

NEW YORK - MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage for anti-gay comments.

The popular radio talk show host who did a weekend TV show for the cable channel referred to an unidentified caller to his show Saturday as a "sodomite" and said he should "get AIDS and die."

"His comments were extremely inappropriate and the decision was an easy one," MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.

There was no immediate comment from Savage, according to a spokesman at his office in California.

The brash, tough-talking Savage is one of radio's hottest jocks. His Paul Revere Society advocates closing borders, deporting illegal immigrants, mandating health tests for immigrants and eliminating entitlement programs.

The televised version of "The Savage Nation" began March 8 despite the protests of such advocacy groups as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Aired at 5 p.m. EDT Saturday, Savage didn't translate into a television hit. He increased the ratings for the time slot marginally, according to MSNBC.

The incident that resulted in his firing began innocently enough. Savage was taking viewer phone calls about airline horror stories, and a male caller began talking about smoking in the bathroom.

"Half an hour into the flight, I need to suggest that Don and Mike take your ..." the caller said, before he was cut off and his words became unintelligible.

"So you're one of those sodomists. Are you a sodomite?" Savage asked.

The caller replied: "Yes, I am."

"Oh, you're one of the sodomites," Savage said. "You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it."

He asked for another phone caller who "didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse who's angry at me today."

These bums "mean nothing to me," he said.

GLAAD spokeswoman Cathy Renna said of Savage's firing: "It's about time.

"This latest attack made the clearest case for why Savage has no place on any reputable news network. MSNBC witnessed firsthand exactly the kind of verbal assaults GLAAD's been warning them about for the past five months, and to their credit, they backed up their promises to hold Savage accountable."

I've heard Savage on the radio before; he plays Metallica songs in his intros coming back from break each time:Yep: :Yep: I certainly don't agree with everything he says, and I don't think he's anything like Rush.

sod?om?ite ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sd-mt)
n.
One who engages in sodomy.

I think that's an accurate definition of one who has anal sex, is it not? Telling someone he hopes they catch AIDS and die was obviously not meaningful, it would be like him telling someone to go jump off a bridge and die. We knew his days were numbered on MSNBC, however, because he doesn't have liberal enough views. He was not a fit there. He'll always have more success on radio.

Come on...the connotation was/is MUCH different, especially considering the hatred he has for homosexuals.

by Michael Savage

What happened on the air is much different than what is being reported. It was in the middle of an airline horror story segment with a great set (see photos above). Out of nowhere a crank caller from a competitive talk show went from describing his airline horror story to making vicious personal attacks against me. I signaled and thought that this crank caller was cut from the air. His insults continued in my ear piece and I reacted to him personally as an individual who was attacking me to defend myself.

Unfortunately, my personal comments to this crank caller were broadcast. In no way did my comments reflect my views of disease and suffering in any way. I have spent my entire life in the field of alternative medicine trying to heal the world and bring comfort to the sick. If my comments brought pain to anyone I certainly did not intend for this to happen and apologize for any such reaction.

Let me repeat, this was an interchange between me personally and a mean spirited vicious setup caller which I thought was taking place off the air. It was not meant to reflect my views of the terrible tragedy and suffering associated with AIDS. I especially appeal to my many listeners in the gay community to accept my apologies for any inadvertent insults which may have occurred.

 That is the best laugh I have had all week. Thanks. Those comments don't reflect his views because he didn't know he was on the air when he said them. Priceless!
