A large slice of humble pie (preferably the skinny variety) is in order and I thought I'd eat it in a seperate thread where everyone could see me munching.

To all those who've read my USA-Mexico selection thread, let me assure you that I eat it with delight, with a great big smile on my face. I couldn't be happier with the result. You won a football match against Portugal. Today you won something bigger. Respect.

As for my prediction, before anyone dredges it up, I stand by it. Predictions and punditry in general are fun. You write what you think, sometimes you're on the money, and other times teams upset the odds. There is nothing wrong, or offensive, about a prediction unless if it is offered with malice and, in any event, if any of us were any good at predicting we'd all be earning a living down at the betting shop.

Anyway, well done lads. Magnificent performance. If this doesn't push football over the top in the US of A, nothing ever will.

I remain,

TTM$

I concur, well said TTM. The Yanks have done good. :D. I'm still looking forward to kicking your ass in the Ryder Cup though ;).

No need for any apologies, TTM, you're analysis was all factual. When you have a team as inconsistent as the US, the result could have very easily been 2-0 the other way. They have talent and they play to attack, so they are very susceptible to getting scored upon, and when they do get ahead, they go to a long-ball, defensive style. It's hard to predict what will happen.

Appreciate both of your congratulations.

The US will never have a love affair with futbal. Our domestic league is on the downturn (hopefully the WC will help it out, but how long can Donovan, McBride and Beasley play in a league where they make less money and are not superstars?) because it's a game that is all about frustration. It's a beautiful game but will only be enjoyed by a few here in the states, and that's OK because its followers are willing to forgo sleep to enjoy the product.

That was a great win for the US but I don't think its as big as when we went into Wembley and broke the English hearts 1-0 ;) Monarch, just have your boys take care of things on your side of the bracket and we'll get them a rematch in the final :D

I can't believe you brought that game up BBC :). I would love a USA/England final. Time we got you back for dumping all that tea in the river and then having a party to celebrate .

Time,

You never need to apologize. Your analysis is alway apreciated. In the end it is our own decision rather to take a game or not!

Thanks to both you and Monarch for the congrats on the US win. As one who has NEVER watch soccer (futbal) I must say that I really enjoyed the game last night.

I'm far from being a fanatic or ready to sit down and watch any game, but I believe I am starting to understand the attraction.

Only one question? Why don't they just stop the clock on penalties instead of adding time at the end??

Good luck the rest of the way.........

No apology needed buddy - much better off wanting to get some cheese with that whine like I do :D

Yer work here has been stupendous and a benefit to us all _ i know exactly how u feel though.

btw, BBC, I think that 1-0 US win u r referring to was the 1950 Cup win at Belo Horizonte, not at Wembley? Early apology if I'm wrong.

Anders,

I was going off the top of my head. I had thought there was a friendly between England and the U.S in the period between Italia ?90 and USA ?94 (I had thought 1993) that resulted in a firing of an English coach. I remember a small article in the Chicago Tribune and then going to get an article to read about it from an English newspaper?s perspective (Obviously there was a lot more press across the Ocean). I just checked the US team?s historical results and it shows only a 0-2 loss in England after the ?94 Cup and that there was a 2-0 US victory against the English squad but that was in Foxboro, MA in 1993. That must be the game that I?m thinking of. My apologies for my lack of facts, but I was so sure of the site and the score in my head when I posted. I am much to young to be having these memory lapses.
