Bluegrass!
I'll tell ya, bout the only one I like is Mark Martin -105 over rudd & Sterling Marlin +105 over R.wallace.

Hadn't looked at Olympic & Wagerstreet yet, but if they don't offer any matchups better than this; it's gonna be a VERY light day for me...

Here's a column that I have been following at Jayski's. Any comments?

California
By Jim Fitzgerald

April 27, 2001

Greetings, Racefans! Welcome to Fast Forward. This week the circuit heads out west to California for the race in Fontana. This track is basically a Michigan twin, but it's a little flatter. I look for a lot of high speed passing and overall, a pretty decent race. What about last week at Talladega? Well, like I said last week, the only thing that's for certain at Talladega, is the fact that nothing is for certain at Talladega. I though Tony Stewart was going to be able to get win number one for the season, but it wasn't to be as Bobby Hamilton walked away with the trophy. Okay, let's take a look at how I did for last week.

My Picks To Win Talladega

29-Kevin Harvick -Finished 12th after moving close to the front early on.

8-Dale Earnhardt, Jr. -Junior finished eighth after leading for a good while, and showed a lot of signs that we saw in Daytona.

24-Jeff Gordon-27th? Good grief, I hate plate racing.

31-Mike Skinner-29th -See Jeff Gordon. Of course, it didn't help matters any that Skinner can't follow directions. He tried to move below the yellow line, and NASCAR hit him with a penalty.

39 other drivers -Hey, look! I got this one right!

Wow!! I had a heck of a week. Plate racing. It's a paradox. One of those oxymoron things. It's not really racing, if you ask me. NASCAR is making changes all over the place, but they won't make one here. Here's a clue. USE SMALLER ENGINES! The cars will go slower, it will get rid of the plates, and we can go back to the best car winning on it's day!

Anyway, I digress.

Now, Westward, Ho!

California. A two-mile D-Shaped oval. The front stretch is 3100 feet, while the backstretch is 2500 feet. There is fourteen-degree banking in the turns, eleven degrees on the front stretch and three degrees on the backstretch. The turns are wide and sweeping, making for plenty of racing room, as long as everyone stays in their own lane.

My Picks To Win California:

2-Rusty Wallace -This might be a bad choice. Rusty could lead all day, get behind on a pit stop and try to wreck the field to get back to the front. However, writer's intuition says that this could be a Wallace day.

12-Jeremy Mayfield -Not to play the teammate game or anything, but, in addition to already having a win here, Mayfield is a teammate to Rusty Wallace.

17-Matt Kenseth -The Roush cars are usually pretty stout here, and Kenseth, I believe, has won here in the Busch series.

24-Jeff Gordon -A past winner here (1997), Gordon looks to be regaining the form of old, not counting that non-racing debacle of Talladega.

28-Ricky Rudd-While this is NOT Michigan, the Yates cars usually run well there, and the tracks are quite similar.

Shot-In-The-Dark-Pick:

10-Johnny Benson -Someday, Johnny Benson is going to thank me for all of this faith I have in him!

Others To Watch:

4-Kevin Lepage -I don't know why, just a feeling.

88-Dale Jarrett -Should I choose anyone else these days?

6-Mark Martin -Past winner here.

40-Sterling Marlin -All Sterling did last week after the race was cry. Reminded me of Dale Jarrett the first four weeks of the season. Frustration has to be setting in for Marlin who has been at the head of the field for every race this season. Perhaps a good run will bring Marlin back.

1-Steve Park -Park can't catch a break at the plate tracks, and after a heartbreak last week, he'll be looking to pick up where he left off in previous races.

Well, gang, that will about do it for me this week. I hope all of your favorites do well, but not as well as mine!

As for an official top five, I'll go with this:

-1. 28-Ricky Rudd
-2. 17-Matt Kenseth
-3. 24-Jeff Gordon
-4. 88-Dale Jarrett
-5. 2-Rusty Wallace

Until next time, my friends....

Neemer, you just like 2 of the 5 match ups i've taken?

I expect a big race from Gordon tomorrow so laying -110 and even with him is quite cheap! Anyhow, we'll find out tomorrow!

Az, i agree with your article about Gordon but have nothing else to say about it!

Since I generally have little to say other than THANKS if I win using your picks I wanted to contribute this with the hope that it might be of some use or interest to the posters on this board.

I'm trying to get a handle on all this stuff and have no idea how long it's going to take me. It might be years.. I dunno.

But I do admire those of you who seem to know what you are doing!

Thank you

Az im a little concerned about Rudd tomorrow He is ready to cover soon. I dont mean win but top three. I respect 1837 work. But not sure if I would go against Rudd twice. If Rudd is off then it works out well. Much like going against a football or baseball team you feal is going to be down this week.
I still dont trust Martin, this is part of my problem.

Well, here's my thinking: ANY one of these guys could win it in my opinion: Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Bobby Labonte, Jeremy Mayfield, Dale Jarrett, or Mark Martin. T. Stewart has looked really good last two times out finishing 7th and 2nd. Gordon can win any race anywhere anytime! Labonte performing like the past Winston Cup Champion! Has had very good practices along with a 1st place qualifying spot. Mayfield winner of last year's race and this is his favorite track which he proved with results from yesterday and today. I can't leave Martin off this list cuz if I do, then I know he's gonna win the damn thing. True, he hasn't performed up to speed so far this year, but he's had pretty good back to back finishes last couple weeks. Jarrett is the points leader and feels like he can win any race he suits up for. He's been the most dominant driver this year....

Jeff Gordon even over jarret

If I had to go against Jarrett, it would probably be Jeff Gordon, but I wouldn't want to make that decision. It's a coin toss in my opinion with each driver having a good a chance as the other.....

Jeff Gordon -110 over rudd

forgive me, but I do like this one as well. Must've skipped over it or something. Lots of folks think Rudd will perform well tomorrow, but there is still no reason for him to think he can beat Gordon. Last two races have been disappointments for Gordon and crew, so expect him to come out firing.

Mark Martin -105 over rudd

Before I started looking at stuff tonite, my initial thought would be that this is a good bet. BUT, like I said previously, lots of folks think Rudd will make a run to the finish in the Napa. Just based upon past performance, this matchup should be very very close. Another coin flip in my opinion.

Tony Stewart +120 over B.labonte

No need to rehash information, but this is a toss up!!!! You could make a case for either team....

Sterling Marlin +105 over R.wallace Sterling is having a MUCH better year and is 4th in points. Has basically been in every race this year besides Talladega where I still think he had the best car. Quite a few folks giving Wallace a chance at a 1st place finish. Loves this track and knows it like the back of his hand. If I had to choose, I'd go with Marlin, but this dual could go either way...

Ricky Craven even over R.Pressley

This is probably more of a bet AGAINST Pressley than it is a bet FOR Craven. Last four races for Pressley have been; 28, 43, 41, & 24 with an average finish of 25.4. He actually started the season pretty good and was in the top #10 in points after 1st three races; but now he's back to his old self which usually means a finish in the area of 30-43. Craven's avg. finish is about 3 spots better and finishes of 23, 27, 28, and 15 over last four. Craven surprisingly finished a strong SECOND in the Dura Lube this season. He's the better driver with the better team and should finish 5-6 positions better than Pressley. This is of course, if he can stay out of trouble. I'll be playing it, but just not for much dinero.....

M.Martin even over j.Burton

I like it! If Martin doesn't finish well here, then he's done for the season, and I'll take back every decent word I've said about him!
smile.gif
This car should finish in top #5!

Nemechek even over k.Schrader

Didn't realize how bad Schrader's car has been this week until I started to see how badly his car has been performing this week. I believe he had to actually use a provisional to qualify for tomorrow's race. Nemechek has had a good year so far finishing 6th last week in Alabama. In the Virginia race the week before, he finished 16th. Average finish this year is 23. Car should be good enuff to handle Schraders...

Same 4 & 4. 31 & 20 for year. + 12.5 Units.
Ever look to see what 3 or 4 seconds due to your results. Can take 4 & 4 make it 5 & 3 real easy. Little differant then most sports.

Well.... kind of a disappointing day except that I got my first NASCAR winner! Yeppers!

I followed all of Neemer's picks (no offense djv) except the last one..

I chose four to wins from that article I posted and from Neemer's opinions as well.
They were:

Rusty Wallace 16/1

Mark Martin 14/1

Ricky Rudd 12/1

Matt Kenseth 30/1

I based my picks solely on what I considered to be chances of winning plus decent return.
And...finally got my first Nascar win! Won a whopping 80 dollars. Not big but almost made up for my losses in golf and baseball today.

Thanks for all your help everyone!

My little brother collects and sells Hot Wheels models. I'm going to see if he can get me a # 2 Rusty Wallace Ford Miller Lite car.

See ya
